Welcome to the One Hundred and Forth Edition of the Owen Guns Bulletin.
Price Fluctuations In Firearms.
For many it is hard to understand why the prices of firearms change. Most would rightly presume that when we pay $700 for a new rifle that the price of the steel and the price of the labour to manufacture it are fairly constant, so there should not be drastic changes. Let me say that in the 50 plus years that I have followed firearm prices there is only one overall constant factor. The Prices alway go upwards. When Owen Guns began in 1974 Brand new Stirling Model 20 semi auto rifles in .22 LR were $29. Model 55 Tikka rifles in .222 rem were $120. Remington Model 788 in .222 rem were $110. and Winchester Model 1894 in 30-30 win were $130. Turkish Mauser were $49.00 with 90 round of ammunition. I had bought my first BSA Air Rifle for 7 English pounds in 1960, way back before Lee Harvey Oswald (supposedly) bought his Mannlicher Carcano for USD $9.25 that included a scope. So don’t worry firearms are good property and like gold always get dearer, they increase in value as long as you keep them rust free, and the wood worm out of the stocks.
Better then Gold, as an Investment.
They credibly on average, increase in value at a higher factor than the inflation rate, even a greater rate if you buy at the right time as due to temporary abnormality with currency exchange rates, or wholesalers who want to quit stock for liquidity, or to replace with another agency, sometimes prices go down. That is the current situation, it might be caused by the wholesalers who increased prices on the 1st March this year due to the US dollar increase, suddenly finds that their sales have dried up. It could also be that a wholesaler has had a surprise duplication in there orders and have two containers arrive at the same time. They need the space and the money so quit stock.
A Time To Buy.
It is hard for the Dealer that already has a 100 of the same item in stock. It is also hard for the customer who bought one last week at price XXX to equate that this weeks price is only XX, and might think that it has been caused by the Dealer over charging for the first price. That is incorrect, Firearm Dealers have margins down as low as 8 % on some firearms and when the Importer/Wholesalers quit stock and lower the prices which his competitors are buying he has to sell the stock that he bought at the more expensive price, below cost. That is business, I enjoy it when we win, and I still enjoy it when we lose. This time the customer wins as long as they are very quick, as when this stock has gone the prices will go up and stay up for the foreseeable future.
