Most shooters would reply to that immediately and say, Yes, for the first time in years we have the KAP.
Please read on and Act today.
I have thought hard before reporting the following, as I know that many disappointed elements within the shooters fraternity will condemn me for reporting this situation. I believe that without understanding the problems we are never going to be able to resolve them. So after reading the following please contact the KAP candidates and ask for a written commitment.
In truth, on the 15^th November 2011, the two KAP members Shane Knuth and Aidan McLindon voted with the Independents Liz Cunningham, Dorothy Pratt, Rob Messenger, and Chris Foley against the latest Weapons Bill, which imposed even more burdens on the law abiding shooters of Queensland. All of those who stand for re-election are insured to retain their seats with a large shooters majority. We are all fully aware that Labour and the LNP, like Tweedle Dee and Tweedle Dum mer will always betray licensed shooters, as they conspired to do on the 15^th November.
After that event shooters began asking KAP candidates and the two elected KAP members above for their individual views on Gun Laws and what changes they would like to see made.

The responses to shooters, regarding the LNP and Labour are not at all surprising, almost a 100 % non return rate, (find response on http://www.foaa.com.au/index-of-candidates-responses-on-gun-laws/ ) but we are all amazed at the poor response from the KAP candidates with only Ade LARSON KAP for Southern Downs with a perfect score of 60 points and very guarded ‘strange’ answers from three other KAP candidates and nothing from the vast majority. When discussing this with KAP candidates the general answer is, “The KAP policy on Gun Laws has not been released as yet”, when it is pointed out to them, that we vote for a person not a party and the questionnaire asks for their personal views, and that they seem reluctant to let the shooters know what they are. They become more ‘chatty’, but still no final results.
This leads us to conclude that the KAP policy is not what the majority of shooters in Queensland have been hoping for and there will be a lot of gnashing of teeth and disappointment if this policy is released. Let us hope that the candidates can get it changed before it is released.
Last week, a Brisbane Firearm Dealer phoned me and asked me to take down the information sent by Ade Larson from the www.foaa.com.au website. As he had been asked to convey that to me from Rob Nioa, who had told him that he was working on COAG to drop restrictions on the import of Category C firearms, as we all wanted Pump Action Shotguns to be on sale again. That if they saw that KAP was too pro gun and wanted to get rid of registration that they would not come to the party on the Cat C Shotguns. I refused and asked him to ask Robert to phone me himself. Then 15 minutes later, Luke Shaw from KAP Brisbane headquarters phoned me and asked me to take down the information from Ade Larson from the www.foaa.com.au website as it conflicted with KAP policy and that the media might pick on the KAP due to his response. Which was a different story.
I asked him to send me a copy of the KAP policy on Gun Laws. He refused, stating that it had not been released yet.
I asked him what was wrong with one of their candidates having a different opinion on Gun laws than the KAP policy. He answered to the effect that they had to have a unified approach.
I asked him if this was a new policy as originally the party put it out, that their members in parliament could vote with their conscience, and already it seemed that there were restrictions on expressing that conscience.
This did not cheer up Luke, he expressed the contention that they did not want the general public to think that their party was a pro gun party. I explained to him that they had done that already, that the media had given prizes for the photo of Bob Katter with his guns on the rack behind him, and that the story of Rob Nioa his son in law shooting the zoo, was carved in concrete. That surely they wanted the support of shooters, and if they had a good policy on Gun laws that they might get a good candidate for Gympie but without it they had no chance.

I reminded him that the Shooters had kept the National Party in Government in Queensland for 30 years and when betrayed they withdrew that support which had kept them out of power for 14 years. I told him, that as of now over 60 % of shooters were convinced, that KAP was the ‘Great Hope’, for their future and were prepared to join and put out a lot of effort to KAP to ensure their success, but already they were questioning and looking for some firm commitment to change the legislation. Everyone wanted the end of Long Arm Registration, they had suffered under it long enough and it was the main reason for slow Pistol PTAs.
As it had been removed in New Zealand and Canada and the billions of dollars cost of it for no results had already been published by the Main stream media that was very acceptable to the general public.
He made comment that he did not believe that individual shooters had the right to contact all of the KAP candidates to establish their opinions and said that shooters should contact head office and get the one answer. I answered that any voter had the right to contact anyone they liked. particularly a person standing for an elected position. That it was their right, so they could judge how to vote at the next election.
I informed him that as “President of the Firearm Owners Association of Australia my loyalty was to the shooters and it was my duty to represent their position. That I wished the KAP all the success and would continue to hand out their brochures on the counter and pin up their posters, but would alway advise every shooter to ask the KAP for a firm commitment to dismantle the Long Arm Registry as without it they would gain very little from the KAP. We would be voting for the best of the three worst options. If the KAP did very well in the coming election, it would feel that it could do well without making any commitment to shooters and if they had no success then the media would blame the shooter elements within the party.” Either way no further ahead for shooters. We agreed that we disagreed and left it at that. Luke, sounded to me like every other party staffer that I have spoken to on this issue over the last 30 years.

ACCURATE FIREARM DESIGN
In 2012, shooters interested in accuracy will find rifles capable, (with the right conditions and loads) of shooting half inch groups at 200 yards, off the bench, or even better.
Captain Land reports that the legendary Sniper, Gunnery Sgt Carlos Hathcock’s (most decorated sniper of the war in Vietnam) rifle barrel looked like it had been sandblasted inside and out. On the inspection sheet, the armourer would say, ‘Slight pits throughout.’ His rifle would hold about two minutes of angle. That’s 20 inches at 1,000 yards and that’s what he had to work with. The rifle a Winchester Model 70 with a target weight barrel and a 8X Unertl scope.
Captain Land said, “We had M1 c s and M1 d s available that would hold a minute of angle, but they didn’t maintain their zero.” Capable of shooting a tight group but either the mounts or the adjusting reticles would move. Captain Land said, “The Unertl scopes would not have lasted an hour in the hands of regular Marines. Carlos had excellent results with that scope, but it was only because he understood it and he knew how to take care of it, and he was very meticulous in doing so. The major problem (they snipers) had with it was that if you got careless, it would fog up on you. Anytime we came back off of a patrol, the scopes would be put in a hot box to dry them out.” The other problem was crosshairs blowing out under the recoil. Captain Land said one of the armourers, Vic Johnson, kept a box of spiders to spin the filaments for replacement crosshairs as a field expedient.

Before leaving Vietnam in 1966, Captain Land set up the initial testing program for what would become the basis for all Marine Corps sniping rifles for the foreseeable future: the 7.62 NATO (.308 Win.) M40, built by Remington with considerable design input from Marines in the field.
Remington Winchester Why Change?
After so much success with the Winchester Model 70 why did they go to Remington? Of the commercial actions available, why not the Winchester Model 70? Why the Remington?
From Captain Land the answer was “The new Model 70 (post-’64) had a weak extractor, and if you didn’t clean the chamber after about every 10 shots it would likely break. And in Vietnam, we didn’t have that luxury.” (Personally I would have stuck with pre-64 actions, even if they were second/hand as they have the Mauser type extractor)
Captain Land said, “Remington really went out of their way to help put this together. They created the stock with the cheekpiece on it; they never had this heavy a barrel in this stock. (Up to that time all heavy barrels were only made for Prone Compeititon, like the Omark) We had the scopes sent in from Redfield. Remington mounted them, tested them, and they were put in a specific case and shipped to Vietnam or to Quantico.” This was the rifle used by Carlos Hathcock in his second tour of duty.
The Redfield 3-9X variable scope for those initial M40s were produced in two finishes, green and deep black. Ostensibly they had a built-in rangefinder, which Captain Land said was “worthless,” because it often melted in hot sun. Captain Land calls the Remington M40 a “Pretty good interim rifle, which saw a lot of use. The main problem was the stock, which swelled and touched the free-floated barrel when it got damp or wet.”Captain Land said that when he left Vietnam, the M40 was fast replacing all other sniper rifles, from the Special Services rifles to the target-grade Winchester Model 70s to the M1s in various configurations.
The knowledge gained with the Remington M40, led to design of the M40A1, a rifle Captain Land says is the most accurate he ever owned. Made in the Marine Corps’ precision rifle shop, it had a finely tuned Remington 700 action, McMillan fiberglass stock and custom heavy McMillan or Sinclair barrels. He said that when first issued it was topped with the Redfield 3-9X. But a variation was created for the 2nd Force Reconnaissance Unit that mounted a Weaver T-10. Later, the rifles were re-scoped with special, strictly Marine Corps, 10X Unertl scopes. Later we will discuss why not variables.

Understanding Reloading Ammunition.
Primer Sizes.
We learn new things every day, and yesterday something could have occurred to change this information, but all we can do is run with what we know now at this point in time. There are actually only two sizes of Boxer primers standardized through out the World, large (.210″ nominal dia.) and small (.175″ nominal diameter). Each size is divided into both rifle and pistol types, thus “Large Pistol,” “Large Rifle,” etc. In addition, there are “Magnum” and special purpose types within each size. There are some larger sizes, but they exist only for military use in heavy automatic weapons ammunition.
Pistol and rifle primers differ only in that the former generally contain less priming compound (being required to ignite smaller powder charges) and are assembled in thinner, softer cups. Pistol firing pins and hammers cannot produce a great deal of energy, so the cup must be relatively weak to be easily dented. Fortunately, pistol cartridges develop relatively low pressures which can be confined by a weak cup. On the other hand, the heavy, powerful firing mechanisms of rifles can easily indent the thick, stiff rifle primer cups. So in many cases using pistol primers in rifles could cause the firing pin to penetrate the cup, allowing hot gas to pass very quicky along the firing pin channel into your right eye. So it is not recommended. On the other hand the pistol primers might not burn the required amount of slower (for Rifles) burning powder, causing variable results. Using rifle primers in a handgun, could up the pressures, if your firing pin sets them off. Again not worth the trouble.
Shotshell primers have also been standardized dimensionally in the past decade. Before that there were two major sizes and a couple more not so prominent. I have seen steel cased 12 gauge use a large Berdan Primer.
Now one size, that previously referred to as “209-size,” is used in all plastic cases that we see today. The brass on the bottom of a 12 gauge case takes up no useful purpose except for ‘good looks’ as we were using full plastic mono hulls in the 1970s and I reloaded many of them 8 or 9 times. Many times it is not even brass just a pressed steel cap which is electro plated to look like brass. One of the reasons the case can safely be made of plastic is that the battery cup primer is enclosed in a steel reinforcing cup. This was designed in that manner due to the earlier inherent weakness of paper shotshell construction. The cup confines the primer proper during firing so that it does not expand and destroy its seat within the case even if it is made of cardboard or plastic. Within the primer is a separate anvil, it is sandwiched between the bottom of the battery cup and the primer cup or “cap,” as it is often called. When the cap is indented by a firing pin, the pellet is crushed against the anvil and ignites, flashing flame through a hole in the bottom of the battery cup to ignite the propellent charge within the cartridge case. Norinco Model 213 ‘Tokargypt’ 9 shot Semi Auto
The Model 213 original basis was designed by John Moses Browning, the world famous firearm designer. In the late 1920s the Colt /Browning mechanism was redesigned by Russian, Feoder Tokerev, simplified for mass production and chambered in the powerful 7.62×25. It used the Mod 1911 swinging link, short recoil system.
To enable easy maintenance the hammer and lock mechanism can be removed as a single assemble. To improve the Browning feed system the ammunition feed lips are machined into the frame rather than relying on pressed tin. Which on a battlefield where magazines lips do not get the best attention is a great advantage in reliability and makes the magazines cheaper to produce. It was an extremely tough, reliable and powerful pistol and was later modified by Hungary for export to Egypt this was known as the Tokagypt. The pistol differs from the Tokarev in being chambered for the 9mm Parabellum, and a fitted safety catch (WHICH SHOULD NEVER BE RELIED UPON) as well as the half cock safety.

As can be seen by the inset photo the barrels and chambers are all chrome plated.It has a plastic wrap around grip stock, instead of the Tokerev ‘bakelite’ and a finger piece type floor plate on the magazine, which improves your chances of quickly getting it out and getting another one in after someone has rammed one in covered in mud. The M 213 Chinese version of this also has a chrome plated barrel shown in the above photograph. These are brand new unfired but have the usual scratch marks and rough corners as shown in the photographs. As standard the barrels are a millimetre short for club licences so are fitted with a slightly longer barrel. The steel is excellent and once a few surfaces, such as slides, are polished they are a slick an easy pointing pistol. FIGHT BACK, (Just before you all get into the Christmas Party mood) Thought for the Week.

Police Minister Roberts, admitted to parliament that 2500 online submissions were received before he withdrew the Weapons Amendment Bill 2010. (Don’t get confused with the Weapons Amendment Bill 2011, which was passed with the full support of the LNP with Labour on the 15th Nov 1011) That pertinent point is, that was all it took to change the Police Minister’s direction. There are approximately 5500 firearm owners who directly receive this ‘Bulletin’, if only half of them made a two minute email, that is enough to change the attitude of all the candidates in the Queensland forth coming election.
This election is very convenient for firearm owners. Power over the full direction of this State is in the balance, like a swinging pendulum. We have waited 14 year for this opportunity. Everyone is sick to the back teeth with Labour and the treacherous LNP were set to steam roll them out of office. Then came Katter’s Australia Party which gave a viable alternative which acts like a blowtorch on the private parts of the LNP. The LNP has recently again betrayed the Firearm Owners by crossing the floor and voting with Labour on the latest 2011 Weapons Amendment Bill imposing more restrictions on shooters. This has given much more, well deserved ammunition, votes, supporters, candidates etc. to Katter’s Party, as the two Katter MP s (with four Independents) in parliament voted, against the Weapons Bill 2011.

The pressure cooker within the LNP has become hotter. Popularity Polls are showing Katter’s Australian Party at 22 per cent of the primary vote in the north Queensland, Labour was on 32 per cent and Liberal National Party 36 per cent. Katter’s popularity is increasing weekly all over the state at the expense of the other main line Parties.This is causing the mainline parties to review their direction. Some LNP candidates have realised that they may well do better in the coming election, if they stand for Katter rather than the LNP. Queensland is on the brink of change. KAP more than likely will have the balance of power.
Firearm Owners have to prove to the candidates standing at the next State election of all parties, (KAP included) that we have a force of numbers and that we all want to turn back John Howard’s UN informed Gun Laws. The Long Arm Registry has to go, it is grossly expensive, billions of mis spent tax payer dollars, which most admit, that it is flawed, inaccurate and out of date. Information that has been sent to them in hard copy up to, two years ago, has still not been updated into the computer system. Firearm Owners find this out when they are having the random check of their Security imposed on them, the Police turn up with a list of firearms they are supposed to have. On some occasions, the Police list is two years out of date, some times they have firearms listed that never existed, some lists are two short. In one of the instances that I know about, the police had a list of his long arms they checked them off and he then said what about the pistols. The Police told him he had no pistols, on his list of registered firearms. Some Firearm Owners might not be as keen as he was to get his list corrected. The Long Arm Registry (one could included the handguns as well) has not solved a crime, nor saved a life. As in New Zealand and Canada it should be repealed.

I know most people are busy, with Christmas and so on but I implore you all, to give the shooters of Queensland a Christmas present, donate two minutes of your time to sending one email to nearly a hundred politicians. They are public figures standing for election, you have a right to know their views on firearm legislation. Only a few, have done this already but we need many thousands to follow them. We have to force that change of direction. The replies from the politicians that have been forwarded back to us has been pitiful. It though, someone has handed them a Black Snake to hold. ACCURATE FIREARM DESIGN
Target Rifle Stocks are identified by the forearm stocks intended for prone shooting from the sling and arm or just supported by hand an arm the beaver tail shape is generally the choice of most. With Target Rifle Stocks that are intended for Benchrest competition the forearm will have a wide flat bottom so it sits well on the Benchrest Stand.

The Beaver Tail forearm stocks are an excellent all-purpose stocks, and they are particularly good for snap shooting, Roo shooting, rapid fire, or Metallic Silhouette. They can be used in all the firing positions, with or without the use of a single or double point sling. There only down side is that they are of course heavier than a sporting rifle stock, which has no importance for Competitive Shooting or eradicating pests from a vehicle.
If a telescope sight is to be used on a rifle that was made prior to the 1970s the comb will usually be found a little low because the line of aim through the scope is higher than through the iron sights, and the comb should be a little higher.
The comb on a these older sporting rifles can be raised the required amount for a scope by lacing a leather cheek pad on the stock. Most rifles manufacture in the last 40 years are designed to be only used with a scope and are not fitted with open sights.
The only exceptions to this of any quantity was the Omark Model 44 Target rifle which had a stock designed specifically for prone target shooting with open sights. This of course is all in the past they were a world leader in the 1960s and won a lot of kudos for Australian Target shooters. As they were an accurate single shot rifle many have tried to re-design them for sporting use or Metallic Silhouette competition but up to day I have not seen any that have had any complete success. The comb is to low for a scope, even when drilled and tapped for it and the stock is to short for off hand shooting. As the forearm is so broad and heavy the balance of the firearm is all wrong so in this incidence use it only as it was well designed for.
Target Rifle /Sniper Rifle Development.
As is the usual case much of the development of the designs we take for granted today have come out of the need of urgent necessity in warfare. Not from the huge multinational arms manufactures, but from the men on the ground struggling to be the killer and not be the killed. To give an example of this we will digress a little, this will also introduce the next editions on stock design.
In October 1966, a (then) Captain Edward J. “Jim” Land USMC found himself without formal orders, standing before the First Division commanding general, Gen. Herman Nickerson, who told him: “I want snipers in this division; I want them killin’ VC. I don’t care how you do it, if you have to, do it yourself. Got any questions?”After a “Yes, Sir” and “No Sir” answer, Land found himself heading a program with no people, no instructors, no rifles, no ammunition, no range, but with some great NCOs “gleaned from a list of all the distinguished marksmen in Vietnam.” Among them was a man who would become his longtime friend, (then)Staff Sergeant (later Gunnery Sergeant) Carlos Hathcock, who would create a legend.
For rifles, Captain Land first scrounged 12 Model 70 sporting rifles that had been procured by Special Services for deer hunting at Camp Pendleton in the USA. Through the PX system in Okinawa, (mail order) Land and his NCOs privately purchased mounts, rings and scopes.
The second lot of rifles used by Captain Land and his team in Vietnam were also Winchester Model 70 target rifles in 30-’06 Sprg. that had been originally purchased as “across-the course” bolt action rifles for the National Matches. They were mothballed after NRA changed match rules to limit service personnel to shooting service rifles. Among them were arms with heavy barrels and sporter stocks. Some of these rifles were equipped with 20X Unertl scopes and mounts, which were originally procured as long-range match optics.
At the time Captain Land was organizing his first sniper teams, a Major Cam Hayden USMC, who was first officer in charge of Marine Marksmanship training, discovered the Model 70s and scopes listed as surplus property. Hayden, who calls his find “serendipity,” also searched Marine Corps inventories and came up with 8X Unertl optics. The rifles were worked over by Marine armourers, fibre glass-bedded and wood removed from barrel channels to free-float the target-weight barrels.
Among these was the rifle that Carlos Hathcock used during his first tour in Vietnam, but Captain Land said “Carlos’ rifle was anything but a tack-driver:” Continued in Edition 64.

Understanding Reloading Ammunition
Development of the Primer Continued from Edition 62
The first non-corrosive priming compound, (or less corrosive) was produced in Germany in 1910. It was designed only for .22 rimfire cartridges. This ammunition was very popular since, for the first time, a fellow need not be overly concerned that his .22 barrel would be eaten away in a short time. This new primer replaced potassium chlorate (salts) with barium peroxide. While its residue was not corrosion-inducing, it was still highly abrasive. It still eroded barrels significantly, and the mercury was still a huge problem in centrefire rifles, so the ideal primer was still far in the future.
Switzerland began using a non-corrosive primer about 1911 and the National Arsenals of Europe commenced huge development programs during the first quarter of the century. RWS Sinoxid priming was the first commercially successful development and by the late 1920′s, Remington had introduced its “Kleanbore” rimfire priming based on European developments.
Even so, early U.S. non-corrosive primers weren’t all they should have been and it wasn’t until the 1930′s that truly successful non-corrosive/non-mercuric types became fully available in sporting ammunition. Another twenty years was to pass before non-corrosive primers reached a sufficient state of development to be adopted by the major powers for military use. Military requirements for storage life and stability are much more demanding than for sporting ammunition and the Military was much more conservative. They had to test for 20 year before they would accept that the priming compound would last that long. These days all sporting primers today will meet those military specifications.
Today most military and commercial primers are all non-corrosive and non-mercuric and are essentially alike, the only differences being that some commercial numbers are “hotter” than others, and that so called “magnum” types are available from some makers. All the compounds are built around lead styphenate which during post-WWII years was determined to be superior to most other practical formulas.
Also during the post-war years, the differences between Remington and Winchester primers and cases were resolved. Originally, Winchester pockets were radiused at the bottom and primers were designed to seat there. Remington, on the other hand, used a square-bottomed pocket and primer to match. For this reason one sees much in older writings about matching case and primer makes. The rounded bottom of the Winchester pocket would “pinch-in” the bottom of a Remington primer, while a Winchester primer would be poorly supported in a Remington case.
Today all primers and pockets are made after the Remington design, and this is no longer a problem. Fifty years ago, primers were made in two shapes. The flat type is standard now, meaning the top of the primer cup is flat, at right angles to the sides, joined to the sides by a small radius. The round type had an arched top and was made at one time or another by most commercial producers.
Both types worked equally well, but required different priming punches to fit their individual profiles. For this reason, all older loading tool brochures specify that one should order the correct punch to match the primers being used. When a flat punch was used to seat round primers, the arch or dome was flattened at its crest, often damaging the priming mix pellet beneath. The use of a rounded punch on flat primers left the centre of the cup unsupported and seating pressure often caused the anvil to raise a dimple in the center of the cup. This also caused priming mix pellet damage. Continued in Edition 64.

A Day That Will Live In INFAMY , Betrayed Again. Decide NOW Action or Take up Tiddly Winks.
However, I’m very sorry to inform firearm owners that the Weapons Amendment Bill of 2011 was passed by the Queensland Parliament 78 to 6. That day 15th November will be a date remembered in infamy by the 250,000 licensed firearm owners, that it will impact on.
We mourn the loss of the few remaining human rights our brothers in arms have left.
Surely, we all have no doubt that there end plan is to leave us with nothing, not even a catapult. We either decide now to take a place in this coming conflict or give up now and go fishing.( Sorry they want to end that as well, or go four wheel driving, sorry they want to end that as well)
Fortunately, we have better tools to fight back with then ever before, in past years we used to write lots of letter to the newspapers one in fifty might get printed, we used to write to politicians and spend a $100 in postage to get one or two useless replies.
Now we have the internet, emails, facebook, immediate communication between ourselves and full colour, movies, sound on the Internet. Now we are not just preaching to the converted in the Shooting Magazines we have our place on the Internet which is accessible to the world. We have to use this new tool to mobilise Queensland’s 250,000 licensed firearm owners, plus families and friends, into making a big difference to the future of this state.

We did not lose, as such. The thousands of submissions received by the members, some of them read out by Mrs Cunningham has told parliament that there is a large force in the electorates that they have to deal with. They know that 250,000 firearm owners, (47,000 recent ones) are going to decide the next election. (Coming Soon). They are already afraid. There worst fear is that these 250,000 votes are not unified, they are not controlled by one organisation, they cannot infiltrate that organisation, they cannot buy off that organisation. Ultimately they will lose for this days betrayal.

Again we were betrayed by the Labour Party the party that used to respect freedom, a party that produced Andrew Fisher, King o’ Mally, John Curtain who all helped Arm Australia. We were betrayed, yet again by the National Party, the party that sold us out in 1996. Now amalgamated with the Liberal Party that also betrayed us today as it did with its deceitful leader John Howard in 1996. Howard, who infamously signed letters in 1996 prior to his election stating that he would defend the rights of firearm owners, then betrayed us in an instant after the Port Arthur murders. Again, instead of investigating and prosecuting the perpetrators he prosecuted the innocent. This process has just been an ongoing enslavement of law abiding Australians. Instead of prosecuting the guilty they fine the innocent, its easier to police. It never works, the real criminal problems thrive, so they prosecute the innocent shooter again.

The four independents and now the two members of Katters Australia Party voted against the Weapons Bill they have been loyal to their constituents, all the LNP /Labour voted to support the Bill and should suffer the brand of Quislings, Kapos, Vichy, collaborators one and all.
One of the other achievements of the Six heroes was that it caused a ‘Division’ in parliament. If it had been only one of two dissenters, the vote would have been un recorded but this time, as 6 opposed, the 78 collaborators had to be listed.

ACCURATE FIREARM DESIGN
Changes in Stock Design that Occurred in the 1920s.(We still use them 90 years later)

Firearm manufactures slowly realised the need to design a stock that could be utilised to a fair degree in any shooting position and accommodate the dual requirements of being able to use open sites as well as a telescopic rifle sight. It became necessary to considerably modify the older American designed stocks of great drop, and crescent butt-plates as on the Lever Action Winchester’s. They also had to break away from the older British and American Military stocks which had been designed primary to switch from aimed prone rifle shooting positions to being used as a pole to plunge in the Pike/Bayonet. This could not be introduced over night, shooters are very conservative and have an ingrained suspicion of firearms that look different and an in built need to have a rifle that grandad would be proud of. Even though the old designs were exceedingly uncomfortable and really impossible to use in any of the new firing positions except possibly when shooting in the standing position at targets on about the same level as the shooter and in slow fire. So, new stocks were designed with flat and larger butt-plates, with less drop at comb and heel, of greater weight (thickness), with pistol grips, and with an enlarged forearms, fitted with a rifle sling, designed for use as an aid to steady holding as well as for carrying the rifle.
Civilian Stock Designs Changed First.
Gradually these stock designs were accepted over a 30 year period, even the Military began to add pistol grips to the stock, higher combs and thicker for-ends. These designs, solidified into certain average dimensions, and in most respects have become fairly well fixed, so that we now have a design that has proved itself on a thousand ranges and in the hands of millions of target shooters and hunters. This now appears to be the one best design for marksmen of average stature and also for all beginners who are learning to shoot. This design is well adapted to shooting in all four positions, up and down hill as well as on a level, and in rapid as well as slow fire. The rifle sling which is an important feature is only seen these days as a carrying accessory instead of an important addition to steady the leading arm for greater accuracy.
The first pioneers of this rifle stock transformation was Winchester and Remington who both began modifying the Military rifle they had both made millions of, in World War One, the Enfield Pattern 1917, or M17. They both converted millions into sporting rifles and modified the stock design. Then they both used the tooling acquired for nothing or very cheaply to produce new sporting models. When the tooling was worn and they realised that with more modern machining techniques they could make them cheaper, Winchester went to the Model 70 and Remington went to the Model 700. I believe they used the number 7 as conservative reminder to the Model or Pattern 17 as there were previous models Pattern 13 and Pattern 14 they wanted to show that the heritage was from the M17.
The Winchester Model 70 Standard bolt action rifle has not changed very much over the last 60 years and with the Remington Classic 700 have turned into the standard centre-fire sporting stock. There are minor differences in some model changes, on average the butt-stock on these two rifles has a drop from line of aim, open sights set at 100 yards, of 1, 5/8″ inches at the comb and 2, 5/8″ inches at the heel. The length from middle of trigger to centre of the butt-plate is 13 1/2″ inches. The checkered steel, or rubberised butt-plate is 5 inches long by 1, 9/16″ inches wide at its widest part, and is very slightly dish shaped, almost flat. The front edge of the pistol grip cap on the Model 70 rifle is located horizontally 2 1/2″ inches in rear of the centre of the trigger, and vertically 1, 7/8″ inches below the centre of the trigger. The rear sling swivel is located 2, 1/2″ inches in front of the toe of the stock. The forearm on the Model 70 is 1, 1/2″ inches wide at a point 6 inches in rear of its tip. Over the last 40 years the vagaries of fashion, dictated by the various shooting magazine writers have been followed by the manufactures and shooters rotating from the above Classic style stock which is still very popular to the Weatherby high cheek piece Monte Carlo style stocks. The only other features of change has been a slightly higher comb on rifles not equipped with open sights and the main change being synthetic stocks which will be the subject of a later article. Understanding Reloading Ammunition
Development of the Primer Continued from Edition 61

Corrosive decay in Brass Cartridge cases due to being loaded with World War Two or earlier primers have been mentioned in earlier editions. During the early decades of the last century ammunition manufactures determined that the combustion of fulminate of mercury released minute particles of free mercury. (Mercury is not health stuff) This was forced into contact with the entire inner surface of the cartridge case by the detonation of the primer and the burning of the powder. Mercury attacks brass, amalgamating with it to destroy its characteristic strength and malleability. In short, the mercury residue makes the brass so brittle it can often be crushed between thumb and finger, breaking into ragged chunks as though it was made of toffee.
Large diameter straight cases using large charges of black powder were less affected than small bottle-neck types .For this reason, black powder era reloaders didn’t object much. Their cases held up pretty well in spite of the mercury. Maybe, without the shoulder most was blown out of the straight walled cases. Much of the free mercury was absorbed by the solid products of black powder combustion, leaving less to attack the brass. Then, too,
the pressures involved in those early cartridges were quite low, never above 25,000 psi. Higher pressures drive more finely divided mercury into the brass. Consequently, modern bottle-neck cases operating near 50,000 psi speeded up and increased the mercury’s effect on the brass.
Also, it was found that smokeless powders were much harder to ignite than black. Where almost any old warm spark would set off black powder, the new types required a hotter, longer and more violent primer flame. This meant more compound in the primer, consequently, more free mercury driven into the brass case.
The action of mercury is irreversible once the cartridge is fired. It completes its action in a very short time, and no amount of washing or other treatment can prevent its completion. I have fired mercuric-primed .303 ex-military ammunition in the afternoon, and by the next morning the cases would break in the resizing die, usually when the neck was pulled over the expanded plug. So if this occurs stop straight away and you know the reason why.
Short, straight cases of pistol type are much less affected by mercuric primers and can often be reloaded many times before failing. Primarily, this is due to low chamber pressures and the fact that pistol primers contain less mercury than the larger rifle varieties.
The advent of the high-pressure bottle-neck cartridge caused the primer boys to replace the fulminate of mercury with a less vicious compound. Commonly used was a mix of potassium chlorate, antimony sulphide, lead sulfocyanate, and black powder. The latter later being replaced with granular TNT or similar high explosive. Even so, mercuric primers continued in wide use for sporting ammunition well into the 1930′s. Some foreign calibers were loaded with mercuric primers as late as the early 1970′s. Factories in North Korea, China could still be using it but mainly they loaded steel cases and most people do not bother reloading steel cases.
The chlorate primer’s corrosive effect on barrels has already been covered in detail. It is obvious, of course, that shooters the world over objected strenuously. Much effort was devoted to development of a primer that produced no harmful residue. Competition among companies was fierce because, naturally, the first one to offer a “non-corrosive” primer could expect to gain tremendously in sales.

Red dot sights use refractive or reflective optics to generate a collimated image of a luminous or reflective reticle. These also have the option of Green reticle.
This collimated image appears to be projected out to a point at infinity, which makes the image of the reticle appear to the user to be projected onto the target. Norinco Model 213 ‘Tokargypt’ 9 shot Semi Auto
The Model 213 original basis was designed by John Moses Browning, the world famous firearm designer. In the late 1920s the Colt /Browning mechanism was redesigned by Russian, Feoder Tokerev, simplified for mass production and chambered in the powerful 7.62×25. It used the Mod 1911 swinging link, short recoil system. To enable easy maintenance the hammer and lock mechanism can be removed as a single assemble. To improve the Browning feed system the ammunition feed lips are machined into the frame rather than relying on pressed tin. Which on a battlefield where magazines lips do not get the best attention is a great advantage in reliability and makes the magazines cheaper to produce. It was an extremely tough, reliable and powerful pistol and was later modified by Hungary for export to Egypt this was known as the Tokagypt. The pistol differs from the Tokarev in being chambered for the 9mm Parabellum, and a fitted safety catch (WHICH SHOULD NEVER BE RELIED UPON) as well as the half cock safety.

As can be seen by the inset photo the barrels and chambers are all chrome plated. It has a plastic wrap around grip stock, instead of the Tokerev ‘bakelite’ and a finger piece type floor plate on the magazine, which improves your chances of quickly getting it out and getting another one in after someone has rammed one in covered in mud. The M 213 Chinese version of this also has a chrome plated barrel shown in the above photograph. These are brand new unfired but have the usual scratch marks and rough corners as shown in the photographs. As standard the barrels are a millimetre short for club licences so are fitted with a slightly longer barrel extension if required. The steel is excellent and once a few surfaces, such as slides, are polished they are a slick an easy pointing pistol. Eight rounds in the magazine.

Queenslands Firearm Owners are being duped, and are being put back to sleep by both politicians who have neglected to read and understand the Amendments to the Weapons Bill 2011 that they are about to debate and vote on, (nothing different about that) and certain members of Some Shooting Associations who falsely believe that their large organisation, that employs people to look at impending legislation would have told them. ‘68CA Prohibition on possession of particular magazines— category B weapons

‘(1) This section applies to the holder of a firearms licence who is the registered owner of a category B weapon under the licence.

‘(2) The holder must not possess a magazine—

(a) if the category B weapon has a lever or pump action—with a maximum capacity of more than 10 rounds for the weapon; or

(b) if the category B weapon is a repeating centre fire rifle—with a maximum capacity of more than 15 rounds for the weapon. Maximum penalty— 10 penalty units.

The Weapons Capacity not the Magazine, the firearm with its in built capacity tubular, is all magazine.
So if you have a detachable magazine for your pump or lever action which gives your weapon a capacity of more than ten rounds you can easily hand it in before the Bill is an Act of parliament and the local Police Station for no compensation. That is wrong, no proper legislator can justify taking property of the innocent shooter. However, the thousands of shooters in Queensland who have in-built, tubular magazines which have a capacity of more than 10 rounds that they must not possess are a part of the weapon.

There is no provision for crimping the tubes or shortening the tubes, or removing the tubes altogether. You cannot have it. It, the weapon has the capacity of more than 10 round, so the court can give you a 10 penalty point find and of course you have a conviction and lose all your firearms and licences.

THIS BILL FOLLOWS THE CURRENT ‘WRONG’ PRINCIPLE OF’ COLLECTIVELY PUNISHIING THE LAW ABIDING AND IGNORING THE INDIVIDUAL WRONG DOER.’
THIS PRINCIPLE IS IMMORAL AND SHOULD BE REVERSED NOT COMPOUNDED.
Keep telling them this, try and get them thinking. Nothing in any of existing Weapons Acts are moral or can be substantiated as doing anything positive for the people of Queensland. So why do our politicians keep imposing them on us?

For Whom The Bell Tolls, It Tolls For Thee
More than likely you will not have a ten shot magazine or a rifle with more than 10 shot capacity, many of you say. Why should I do anything. The Larger than life answer to that is that if you don’t, whatever you shoot they are going to get around to you and your guns or your knife or your laser, or your nightscope. For as long as these politicians can believe that they can get away with penalising the innocent law abiding shooter, by removing his property, fining him if he forgets, taking his licenses and all his guns of him, if he does not remember to sign the range register, then we will stay being the hunted, the prey, the sport of policemen wanting another feather in there promotion.

Collectively Punishing the Innocent Fire Arm Owners, Ignoring the Criminals.
Twenty years ago, we all made the mistake of accepting this oppressive legislation, I and a few others warned of its underlying mammoth problem. That is that it does not work, it does not change criminal behaviour it only imposes its cancerous hold on the law abiding, and of course does nothing to stop the causation of social problems. Criminals committing armed robbery are un affected, murders at home are un affected, home invaders increase as the general public are disarmed. So the parliamentary factories of legislation gear up and ban more of our property, limit more of our sport and hobby.
They are horrified, scared to death of our growing numbers, scared of the power we have over them at the polls if we every realise that power and organise and unify. They are desperate to limit our numbers that is why they increased the fees 126 %, that is why they have these amendments, that is why they grant money to Large Shooting associations, which supply paid employment for Shooting association organisers. Naive, are shooters who expect there paid association organisers to reject legislation.

Politicians put the Interests of Criminals before the interests of the Victim.
When an 80 year old is beaten to death in their homes, by criminals for their pension money, some of them are ex rifle and ex pistol club members fully qualified with forty years of training, but have been disarmed. Have they got the right to defend themselves, even if they failed, they at least would have the right to defend themselves not just offer them selves up as a sacrifice for political correctness.

The Enemies of Australia.
The Party politicians are the enemies of Australians, they are the ones organising the break down of law and order. They are ignoring the cause, the armed criminals and instead of making the police prosecute the wrong doers, are imposing oppressive theft laws onto the law abiding in a fraudulent charade, making it seem like they are acting. Well they are acting, both sides of politics, with not a cigarette paper of difference between the parties or there individual members. They are all career politicians, once the have party pre-selection they have jobs and pension for life and so are totally dependent on the party. Only vote for independents, let them chose who governs when there is a balance of power. The Political Parties are all our enemies.

Not Short on Cunning, they Know that All This Gun Legislation is Oppressive and Won’t make a Bit of Difference to Armed Crime.
They know that if they have a drunk driver that drives into a supermarket and kills 10 people that it is useless banning cars, or banning alcohol they all fully aware that the driver has to be punished, he goes to jail, he loses his licence to drive, they might even have an educational campaign to prevent drink driving but never would they suggest banning cars, no matter how many were killed. They know it is correct that the law breaker, is punished not the thousands of innocent owners of the Cars, but when it comes to firearms they only know the immoral technique of stealing.

And NO weapons were used in 85 murders, so hypothetically when they have taken all the guns, and they have taken all the knifes and we know from many sources BIS, Queensland Police http://www.police.qld.gov.au/Resources/Internet/services/reportsPublications/statisticalReview/0910/documents/Monthly%20Crime%20Trends.pdf that there has been a very slight decrease in the murder rate beginning in 1988 but it has only been a very slight decrease so the after cricket bats and rocks are banned, using the same logic as they have for the last 20 year just banning and oppressing the innocent, they amputate every man women and child right hand, when the murder continues at the same rate will they then legislate to cut all hands off. Ludicrous, of course but this is the logic they have proceeded with for twenty years. It does not work, so move on to the next, semi autos this time, Shotguns, next time, Pistols, the time after, knives, Toys, laser, there is no end to it. All to escape the Police from doing their job and prosecuting the bad guys.

They cannot use any legitimate argument so insult us all. Why, Well the Way they see it we are all Bad Guys.
We are fit for any treatment, They call us right wing red necks, Gun Crazy, they mock us, they slander us, call us right wing extremists, fruit cakes, gun nuts, they have been doing this since the 1970s. As they have no logic for their behaviour their only defence is to belittle us and to split and divide us.

Freedom Lost.
When you think of the freedom we have lost already and the freedoms we are still to lose many of us will remember the wars for freedom of the 20^th Century, the wars to save our country and other countries from oppression and tyranny. We awake in the 21^st Century to a world where we are discriminated against, there is Anti discrimination laws but none of them are for us, we cannot speak out there is no freedom of speech, you do not have the freedom to own property, you do not have the freedom to use your land for what you want to do on it. We are bound down by central planning and show your papers. These were the philosophies that our countries young men opposed, they went out to sacrifice their lives, for the freedoms we have given away for nothing. What a price they paid, how cheap are we, the gravity of our sloth, we use words like, won’t affect me I have n’t got one of them. I will sell mine and buy a camera. I wrote a letter last time. No one wants to put themselves out or sacrifice anything anymore. I am not talking to the 5000 or so that get this newsletter, most will not even have scrolled down this far. So untold thousands of Queenslanders will be robbed, thousands more will be denied to buy what they want and millions more will be next in the queue of handing in what ever the politicians believe they can take next. Unless you give them a good telling, Now.

Which will be before the house on October 11th 2011. Thought for the Week , Understanding Reloading Ammunition and Accurate Firearm Design will continue when this emergency is over. We are including a kit, so that all can be informed and to assist firearm owners in making urgent submissions to the local members of parliament. If you do not reside in Queensland police forward this email to any contacts in Queensland as you could be next in line for this horrendous legislation. DO NOT THINK THAT THIS IS JUST THE LABOUR PARTY. THIS WILL BE SUPPORTED BY THE L/NP UNLESS YOU HELP CHANGE THEIR MINDS. REMIND THEM, DO THEY WANT TO WIN OR LOSE THE NEXT ELECTION. THIS WILL DECIDE. OVER 155,000 LICENSED FIREARM OWNERS WILL DECIDE THE NEXT ELECTION. The tens of thousands of un licensed firearm owners will not hand their rifles in, so they will not care.

If we do nothing, Queensland will make law in Mid October 2011 banning centre fire rifles which have a built in magazine capacity of over 10 shots, pump actions, lever actions anything that can take 11 shots, will have to be handed in for NO compensation. That means Model 1866 (Henry) Winchester, Model 1873 Winchesters, Model 1892 Winchester’s 1873, likewise Browning, Marlin, Remington, Rossi, Puma, Colt Lighting, Chiappa, Uberti, Henry, Timberwolf, and Remington Pumps, one in the chamber puts the rifles built in magazine capacity at 11and if you have done the right thing and registered that rifle you will have to hand it in for no compensation. There are many more sad, idiotic, sections of legislation in the Weapons Amendment Bill of 2011 WeaponsAmB11 which enpowers the government to misuse its power, by stealing lawfully owned property from law abiding citizens.

The Shadow Minister of Police Langbroekin his speech on this proposed bill on the 8th September 2011 HANSARD 2011_09_08 Scroll down to Weapons Amendment Act, read for yourself, he says’,
which we will not be opposing.” and this is supposed to be an opposition LNP government, our friends, well with friends like these who needs enemies. The Lib/NATs have betrayed the Firearms Owners is 1997 , 2003 and now are set to do it again 2011. They have to be told why they are still in opposition and why they are going to stay there after the next election, if they do not change their policy on firearms.

He also states that 2500 submissions from Firearm Owners objecting to the last draft bill prevented it going further. That obviosly was not quite enough so we need more than that to go to parliament via your local member before 11th of October 2011 to stop this one. Remember it has to be there well before the 11-10-11.

Act Now. Do not put it off, you could forget and feel very bad handing your firearm over for no compensation.

Do not forget to put your submission on your local politicans facebook page so that it goes to all his/her other friendsas well.

Come on, we have to do our bit, others sacrificed a lot for our freedoms, now its our turn to do just a little bit more. It won’t cost you , your life just a little time and maybe a stamp. We were handed our freedoms, others paid the supreme price for ours, we have try and save what we can for the next generation.

It has a plastic wrap around grip stock, instead of the Tokerev ‘bakelite’ and a finger piece type floor plate on the magazine, which improves your chances of quickly getting it out and getting another one in after someone has rammed one in covered in mud. The M 213 Chinese version of this also has a chrome plated barrel shown in the above photograph. These are brand new unfired but have the usual scratch marks and rough corners as shown in the photographs. As standard the barrels are a millimetre short for club licences so are fitted with a slightly longer barrel. The problem was not born from the streets it was manufactured by social ‘ist’ ‘do gooder’ reformers. “Those that sow the wind, will reap the whirlwind.”
Again, the British Gun Laws worked for the Looters and Crims. The poor disarmed public were queuing to buy aluminium baseball bats to defend their families, properties and lives again. Repetitively, the second generation of coloured immigrants, (black, brown, light brown, yellow, and white, sometimes referred to in a derogatory way as ‘whiggers’) are again out of control, becoming more confrontational, attacking ‘law abiding’ whites and blacks and robbing stores, in organised mobs. It is in an epidemic form, fermenting in every Angelo Saxon country in the world.

It is not oddly that large gutted, ‘has been’ whites, like me, are becoming more outwardly and openly, sick of it? What’s more annoying is that the media are hiding the cause and nature of this mass theft and violence, which further infuriates the right wing, red necks into stating, “Bring it on.”
The media paints me, as the model, racist, white supremacist, ‘red neck’ and slings in many other untrue slurs as well, just because I am a pro gun activist, and believe in the freedom of speech and have been persecuted and prosecuted for stating that Sodomy is wrong and is a very un healthy life style. Yet, I am criticised by friends for, explaining to them that their solution would give firearms negative publicity and would play us into the media and anti gunners clammy hands. “Kill all the ………” comments get no support from me, besides the known fact that my genocidal inclinations are limited to those, whose backsides polish up the thick leather seats of Parliament House Canberra.

Accurate Firearm Design
Hand Guards And All That!
In the days of black powder and muzzle loading firearms, firing at best 2 rounds per minute, rifles rarely got hot, maybe warm enough to create a little mirage when using the sights but not hot enough to burn the hands. In the 1870s, when British Forces went to South Africa to fight the Zulu’s with the Martini Henry rifle, which fired the .450/577 round, the soldiers who knew the score, used wet deer skin to wrap around the barrel. In the sun it went hard, dried into shape and gave their hands protection from the heat of the barrel. As the Zulu’s were rather thick on the ground at places like Rorkes Drift and Ulundi and after lots of rapid firing at thousands of bodies, they needed to cut a bit of space with the Bayonet and give them the drill, 1 , 2 three 1, was the timing as I remember it. As the soldier had to grip the rifle, as he would use a pike, they often burnt the skin off their hands. Of course it was much worse for the Zulu who had to wear the pointy end between his ribs. It was noticed that the ‘old sweats’, who had used the deer skin had not suffered any burnt hands, so from then on the worlds firearm designers on government budgets and expense accounts began to design handguards on all military rifles.
We still have them on new military rifle today. Quick bursts of more than one magazine full, (often necessary in war, but unless you come across a mob of ten pigs, it not an occupational hazard in hunting,) will heat the barrel to such an extent that it would seriously burn the hands if touched. Therefore, semi-automatic of fully automatic shoulder rifles intended for military use are provided with synthetic hand guards over the top of the barrel to protect the hands from the hot barrel, both in ordinary operation and when using the bayonet. Such hand guards are objectionable in that they prevent free circulation of the air around the barrel to cool it, but they are necessary to prevent burning the hands. They also, to some extent, prevent the cloud of mirage of heated air that arises from a very hot barrel from obscuring the target when aiming. This phenomena is a common occurrence in Australia, when looking through the scope it makes the target seem underwater or in a swimming pool. Many shooters experiencing this will, wait have a cup of tea, and then go back to shooting with a clear vision. Of course in competitive shooting with time a great factor, the only way to cure it is to fit a tube to the front of your telescopic sight. Scope manufactures call the ones issued with the big target scopes, “Sun Shades” and when shooting into a low sun, they may be very useful, but I have found the main use if to deflect the heat rising from the barrel, which will generally leave a cooler clearer air in front of the sight. Sometimes is necessary to extend this tube with a thin sheet of rolled up cardboard rolled into a tube and Sellotaped to the front of the telescopic sight. Obviously, none of the attempts to alleviate the mirage must cause anything to touch the barrel itself as this will immediately change the harmonics of the barrel and subsequently change the point of impact of the bullet.

Understanding Reloading Ammunition
Development of the Primer
The Boxer primer is fabricated quite differently. It utilizes the same cup type and pellet of priming compound, but there the similarity ends. A conical anvil stamped from thin sheet metal is pressed tightly into the mouth of the cup, its peak bearing snugly against the priming pellet. Thus, anvil, cup, and pellet are formed into a single complete assembly.
The Boxer case contains a simple, flat-bottomed primer pocket, pierced centrally by a fairly large-diameter (usually about .080″, or a bit less) flash hole. When the primer is seated, the “feet” of the anvil must bear on the bottom of the pocket. If they do not, part of the force of the firing pin blow will be absorbed in driving the entire primer further forward into the primer pocket hole before the pellet is crushed and ignited. This causes staggered ignitions which lead to a loss of accuracy and reliability.
The Boxer primer is used almost totally in Australia, United States and Canada, it only when we have some obscure European brass cartridge cases to reload to we have to search high and low to find a source of Berdan Primers. The Berdan primer is used by Europe and parts of the world where they do not reload much. However, as Nato countries have had to fall in line with the U.S.A manufactured ammunition calibers the rest of the non aligned countries of the world are following suit with Boxer primed ammunition. For example, Israeli-produced military ammunition is Boxer primed. Some Indonesian and Chinese ammunition are Boxer primed and Germany‘s RWS is also now producing military and sporting cartridges in both types for the choice of the buyer.
In Australia, we find it hard to understand why anyone would ever use want to use Berdan-type cases and primers, but think about it, if its all we can get to keep a rifle shooting we will go to that extra trouble and use Berdan cases. Remember, though, that widespread reloading of metallic cartridges is virtually unknown in many other countries of the world. Except to the handloader, the differences between the two primers are insignificant and not relevant as the shooter just fires them, some do not even pick up the empty cases. Not like us bower birds.
Due to the location and size of the flash holes, it is virtually impossible to remove fired Berdan primers by means of a punch through the case mouth. The most common method is to pierce the cup with a slender, pointed instrument from the outside, then pry it out. As with the RCBS Berdan De-Cappers on the market. During black powder days, a tool called a “cap awl” was used for this purpose. European tools for the purpose look like a three-handled pliers and combine the piercing and prying into a single motion. Regardless of the type tool used, the point must be flat (horizontal) and chisel-shaped A conical point such as on an ice pick will tear through the thin cup, leaving it hopelessly stuck in the pocket. Remembering this simple tip can save you hours of blood, sweat and tears.
Boxer primers are very easy to remove. The large central flash hole allows a punch to be inserted from the mouth of the case to push the expended primer out of its pocket. It is just that simple. What came first the chicken or the egg? I have always asked the question. Did we develop as a handloading country because of the availability of the simple to replace Boxer primer? Or did our grandfathers adopt the Boxer primer because they were handloaders? I believe the latter as Australia began in shooting with British military and British calibres and way back they were all Berdan primed. Either type of primer is equally simple to insert in the case. They are simply pressed into the proper depth, and the same types of tools will handle either type so long as diameters do not differ greatly. Bizarre, really, that by the late 1880′s and early 1890′s the U.S. Berdan primer was solidly entrenched in England and the rest of the world. And the British Boxer was standard in virtually all U.S. production ammunition.
The Australian handloader is inclined to sneer at the Berdan primer and loudly proclaim the Boxer far superior. Well, for reloading with our tools, the latter is certainly the most convenient. As for being superior, an objective analysis indicates otherwise. From a purely technical viewpoint, there is little doubt in this scribe’s mind that the Berdan primer delivers equal or even more reliable results.
From a mechanical viewpoint, the interposing of a light-weight anvil between pellet and case is bound to inject ignition variations. The anvil may or may not be seated solidly on the bottom to the primer pocket. Assembly of anvil to cup can easily vary from the ideal. Pellets (particularly the dry-mix type) pre-stressed by the anvil are more likely to crack or flake in storage, handling, and loading. All of the foregoing are potential troubles that do not exist in the Berdan-type case-primer combination. In addition, the Berdan primer is simpler and cheaper than the Boxer to produce. At the same time, production of Berdan cases is extremely little (if any) more costly than Boxer types.
All of this convinces me that purely from the viewpoint of doing the best job of igniting small arms ammunition at lowest cost, the Berdan primer might even be superior to the Boxer. Do not rise in wild outrage at this statement. I would scream louder than all of you if the Boxer primer were replaced. Cold chills run up my spine just thinking of the headaches that would have developed if even a part of the millions of primers I’ve used, or thousand of customers whom I have had to instruct, had all been Berdan. When it comes to reloading, Colonel Boxer’s invention has no peer.

That means Model 1866 (Henry) Winchester, Model 1873 Winchesters, Model 1892 Winchester’s 1873, likewise Browning, Marlin, Remington, Rossi, Puma, Colt Lighting, Chiappa, Uberti, Henry, Timberwolf, and all Remington Pump actions as there are 10 shot magazines available and one in the chamber puts the rifle capacity at 11and if you have done the right thing and registered that rifle you will have to hand it in for no compensation. There are many more sad, idiotic, sections of legislation in the Weapons Amendment Bill of 2011 WeaponsAmB11 which enpowers the government to misuse its power, by stealing lawfully owned property from law abiding citizens.

A Land Fit For Hero’s

In the Wars of the 20th Century the retuning servicemen were promised, A Land Fit For Hero’s.
Is it now a land fit for hero’s when a returned serviceman is hounded, hunted, threatened and punished if he has not filled in endless forms? (I have known World War Two veterans shoot themselves rather than register their rifles.)
Is it a land fit for hero’s when the ex serviceman suffers extortion or loses his property, his heirlooms, his rifle?
Is it a land fit for heros when the returned serviceman is condemned and fined for what he thinks and believes in?
Is it a land fit for hero’s when a returned serviceman is prosecuted and persecuted for saying what he believes is wrong?
It is a land fit for hero’s when the returned serviceman must submit himself before home invaders as he is not allowed by law to defend himself or his family or his property?

Time For Action

Over the last few months I have been corresponding with members of the State LibNat Party, emphasising that the reason they have not been in government for over a decade is due to the National Party Russel Cooper- Liberal Party John Howard Un-informed Gun Laws. No argument, not a mouse squeak. I informed then that the reason why they are not in power in Canberra at present is because of John Howard’s Un-informed Gun Laws, a little squeak, ‘its not an issue any more’. Its not an issue because no one wanted to raise the reason why Bob Catter and Tony Windsor resigned from the LibNat Party was the Un-informed Gunlaws. If they had not done that, to day the Tweedledees would be in power instead of the Tweedledums.
The latest message we are getting from the LibNats is that they have 11 marginal seats in South East Queensland and they believe that this part of Queensland is anti gun. Some one has told them that the 200,000 plus licensed shooters, the 200,000. wives and families of shooters, the hundreds of thousands unknown that own firearms and never bothered to get a license all live outside of South East Queensland, so are not an issue in this next election. So they will not apologise for what they did to shooters in 1997, they will not remove the long arm register. Even when they know that it does not work, it does not save a life or solve a crime, its just a bureaucratic nightmare that costs the tax payers squillions, Ninety staff, just on Permits to Acquire.
NatLibs, state,‘People are fed up with Labour’, and its their turn, they say. With the rising star Campbell Newman and recent success in NSW they are confident of victory. Most of us would love to see Bligh lose, but we shooters need bargaining power. So we have to vote for independents or help the new pro shooting party, (Mr Bob Katter officially registered ‘The Australian Party’ yesterday. We shooters can give them the balance of power.
If we shooters vote together and work together we can make or brake any political movement in this State, we already have a huge Statewide network of Gunshops, Shooting Clubs and Properties. They all have networks, they all communicate with hundreds of other people around them. We all have a common interest we all give the Queensland Police State our wealth and our freedom, ie, we register and they control us. We all have certain intelligence or we would not be reading this and we would not be interested in shooting. If we were not half smart, we could not fill in the paperwork for Weapons licensing. We have all felt the boot of bureaucratic power on our necks and know its time to do something about it.
The political powers of both sides use us like a punching bag, screwing those right wing, red neck, gun owners tighter. They will treat us like the dirt beneath their toe nails until we impress on them that we, the silent working majority decide their fate.
The main political parties Tweedledee and Tweedledum do not want freemen, they want slaves dependent on the dole, or Tax slaves that they can squeeze and steal it from. No one else is needed for the parasitical political bureaucrats to feed off.
For Shooters it’s the last chance, in the next elections both Federal and the state of Queensland they will be knife edge. We all need to form small groups of no more than 7 shooters and join the new Australian Party, set up branches in your electorate. A word of warning do not broadcast your pro-gun stance, as some may remember that in South Australia, in 1996 1100 shooters joined the Liberal Party and by some secret means were identified and had their Cheques and applications returned. We do not know yet what this new Australian Party policy is but by forming branches we can help create it and keep it on track. This new party will also expose the National Party again, as soon as it refuses to swap preferences it shows it has more of an allegiance to the Socialist left than to the right that it used to represent. ALLIANT RELOADING RIFLE POWDER

The Golden Model 39A started life as the Marlin Model 1891, the first lever action rifle ever chambered in .22LR and the magazine was loaded through a conventional side gate in the receiver. The tubular magazine was changed to front-loading with the Model 1892, due to the difficulties of receiver feeding the small rimfire round.The 1892 gave way to the takedown Model 1897. Since the early 1950s Marlin has used their proprietary Micro-Groove rifling in the Model 39A. This rifling uses many small lands and grooves rather than 2, 4, or 6 deeper grooves used by the majority of rifle makers. The rifling is also made to a 1 in 16″ right hand twist. The combination of these two factors arguably adds to the accuracy of the rifle and indeed the 39A’s reputation would seem to bear this out.
The Model Golden 39A is built of forged steel parts and American grown black walnut. It is one of the very few accurate rifles of all descriptions with easy takedown ability (it can be taken apart using a coin). The Model Golden 39A has a solid-top receiver and side ejection, which makes mounting a scope easy. The signature gold trigger was discontinued in favor of a blued trigger between 1982 and 1985

Accurate Firearm Design
Self loading Breech Actions
In gas piston operated automatic breech loading firearms, all the power of the piston must not be expended in extraction. There must be enough remaining energy to retract the bolt, compress the counter recoil spring, and eject the fired empty case. Within this, the piston is assisted by the momentum of the bolt, carrier and any connecting rod which the gas has put in motion. Momentum may be obtained either by a high initial speed given to a light mass, or by a slower speed given to a heavier mass. The machine gun, and to some extent the sub machine guns or machine carbine can employ a very heavy breechblock which retains its momentum well, but the automatic shoulder rifle cannot have such a heavy block, for that would increase the total weight of the weapon to an undesirable level. Therefore, the gas operated rifle must employ speed of extraction instead, and as we have discussed, this gets us into extraction troubles.
Here again, we find the matter of pressure looming up as a governing factor in design. The timing must be predicated on the pressure of the cartridge and the velocity of its gases when they enter the gas port, and these can vary but little. Automatic arms are not well adapted to a series of loads with light and heavy bullets at varying velocities. However, very often when a cartridge will not operate the self-loading feature of the weapon it is possible to manually operate the breechblock, which practically turns the rifle into a straight pull bolt action arm.
The better automatic rifles such as the FN FAL, have a feature similar to the Bren gun with variable sized gas ports and a number system to adjust them, but due to the price they have been fazed out in later models. Another factor would be the impossibility of training some of to-days recruits in how to adjust them so designers seem to have settled with the AK variants and M16, M4s for something that will work with most of the different grades of ammunition most of the time.
All semi-automatic sporting rifles and pistols appear to operate better when a hammer is used to drive the firing pin forward, rather than a coiled mainspring operating a firing pin rod as in bolt actions solidly locked weapons or a Stirling Model 20, 22 rifle. It can be observed that most of these semiautomatics have a hammer which is usually inclosed within the receiver. In all semi automatics a disconnector operates to keep the hammer at full cock when the breechblock closes and thus prevents full automatic operation, for the trigger finger has no time to release its pressure on the trigger before the breechblock has completed both its backward and forward movement. When the trigger is squeezed the weapon fires but one shot. The trigger is then released slightly by the finger, and a second squeeze fires the second shot, and so on. Any examination of the lock of a semi-automatic weapon will show how the disconnector operates.

Understanding Reloading Ammunition
BULLETS

In briefly describing the manufacturing operations and construction of powder and bullets, the school of thought is that it will give information that will assist in your choices of materials.
From first to the last of all these forming operations, the cup is gradually reduced in diameter and increased in length. When in finished form, ready to accept the core, it must be slightly less in diameter than a finished bullet diameter. The jackets are then trimmed to length, usually in a very small automatic lathe setup. However, if a scalloped mouth is called for, trimming must be done in a pinching die system or variation thereof. If the bullet is to be of boat-tail form, the base of the jacket is given this shape in another punch and die operation before it is ready to have the core inserted.
Cores are pre formed from lead alloy, (lead, antimony, tin) of the required hardness. They are usually formed from lead wire in double acting automatic presses and dies in much the same fashion that handloaders swage their own bullets and cores. In an industrial setting imagine a press double acting like the closing jaws of a pair of pliers. Generally, the cores are brought to finished weight and of a shape and diameter that will fall readily into the open jacket by gravity by their own weight. This isn’t usually the exact shape that the core will reach when the bullet is completely assembled.
Cores and jackets are then fed into an automatically operated bullet assembly press which first inserts the core in the jacket, then swages the two to final form and dimension in precise dies under great pressure. Depending upon the bullet, this may be accomplished in a single die, or in several progressive stages. If a reinforcing cover is called for over the point, such as the Silvertip, it must also be assembled at this time and requires additional steps.
During the assembling operation, the slightly undersize core and jacket are both “bumped-up” under great pressure to final diameter. However, in some instances, the finished bullet is forced through a tungsten-carbide die to burnish it and bring it to final diameter, ironing out any minor surface irregularities that might exist. In the event of a cannelured design, the cannelure will be rolled in place by another automatic turning machine, and the bullet may then be forced through a final sizing die to remove any irregularities produced by the canneluring operation.
In any event, after final assembly and sizing, bullets are washed and sometimes polished by tumbling or water polishing to give them that pristine look you see when you take them out of the box. (Please don’t touch them in the gun shop before you purchase or the staff will rightly get very aggressive with you and put your prices up. As once bullets have been touched with sweaty skin they tarnish and are not as saleable.)
Naturally, special features require additional manufacturing operations which increase the complexity and cost of the entire process. For example, use of a two part core requires running the bullet through two assembling machines, the first to properly seat and form the rear core, the second to seat the front core and bring the entire assembly to its final shape and dimensions. The same applies to partition-type bullets. If the core is to be bonded to the jacket, then at some point during assembly this bonding must take place. It must be accomplished after the core and jacket are brought into firm contact under heavy pressure, but before the final shape is produced.
In recent years, another method of bullet manufacture has been developed. Instead of depending upon precisely controlled sheet or strip jacket material, this method utilizes short sections of rod. Raw jacket material of equal quality is cheaper in rod form than in sheets or strips and is less subject to handling and shipment damage.
Initially, rod stock of the proper composition and characteristics is cut very accurately into short lengths of the proper size to produce the jacket desired with a minimum of waste. These “slugs” are fed into an automatic press where they are held confined in a die while a shaped punch is driven down into one end of the plug. The punch penetrates the slug and forces the metal under pressure to extrude upward around the punch. The initial operation forms a cup, much like that formed from strips as already described. Depending upon the bullet type and shape and jacket material, the initial extrusion operation may prepare the cup for the rest of the procedures already described, or one or more additional extrusions may be required. However, once the basic cup is properly formed by extrusion from rod, the balance of the jacket-forming and bullet assembly operations remain essentially the same as described above.
The foregoing applies, of course, to sporting bullets and to military, lead-core, ball bullets. Special-purpose military types such as incendiary, armour-piercing, and tracer involve essentially the same jacket-forming operation, but become tremendously complicated in core manufacture and final assembly.
After all is said and done, anyone with a punch press and a few dies can make bullets. However, good ones with accuracy are dependent upon, design, bullet materials and consistency than any other single factor, such as the brand of who made them. Consequently, it is essential that every refinement possible be made to both material and methods to insure that bullets are uniformly of the best quality.
In the past few years, Remington-Peters has developed a new bullet manufacturing process, the details of which are not generally discussed, but which apparently produce a very high degree of uniformity with at least some savings in cost. Apparently, this process consists of first forming the core to final shape and dimension, then building up the jacket by an electroplating process to proper thickness and profile. Following this, the bullet is polished, sized, and altered at the point to secure the desired expansion characteristics, such as Hollow point. Many tests have proven these bullets to be superbly accurate.
Don’t get the impression that lead bullets have disappeared. Nearly all rimfire ammunition and most revolver cartridges are loaded with plain lubricated lead bullets whose design and manufacture haven’t changed in over a century. The worlds most accurate rimfire ammunition and the best match revolver ammunition uses un jacketed lead bullets.
With one or two exceptions such as the .357 Magnum factory lead bullet loads produce well under 1500 fps, most under 1000 fps. A very soft alloy, hardened only slightly by a minute portion of antimony, works well in that velocity range and is easy and cheap to work with. Lubricant is vital to accuracy and to prevent leading, (Lead Deposits in chambers and barrels) each company has its own closely guarded “secret formulas.”
The best lead bullets are made from lead wire which is cut into short lengths which are then fed into automatic presses where they are fully shaped in dies under heavy pressure. Cannelures (lubricant grooves) are then rolled in on another machine, and the finished bullets are lubricated. Cheaper lead bullets are cast from molten lead.
When driven fast enough, all lead bullets will expand to some degree if of soft alloy. Until thirty five years ago, no factory loaded lead bullets were designed specifically to produce expansion other than .22 RF hollow-points. Now, though, all companies offer products such as, lead 158-grain, semi-wadcutter containing a deep hollow point to promote expansion. It is intended primarily for police work and does expand quite well at relatively close ranges when fired from all but the shortest-barreled revolvers. It is offered in .38 Special caliber only.
Gas check lead bullets are little used by the factories. Their manufacture is as already described except that the gas check is joined to the body in the dies. Gas checks are primarily the tool of the hand-loader and are covered in the chapter on cast bullets.
Factories don’t cast bullets today. Most of them haven’t done so since well before the turn of the last century when efficient swaging machines were developed in the 1930s.

The Norinco JW 105. in .223 Remington.
This is the (Jain Way) JW Model 105, Sometimes called Norinco. These rifles are made in the same factory that manufactures the now famous JW 15 .22 rifle (the Brno Mod One Copy) if you have had a JW15 or know of anyone who had one, you will know that they shoot sometimes better than the rifle they imitiated. These JW105 s are in .223 Remington calibre and have a five shot detachable magazine. They also come with Weaver style mount bases and Quick Detachable studs for QD sling swivels If you look carefully at the close up photograph you will notice a shiny silver colour, at the breech face,the camera has picked up the chrome plating from inside the chamber. The Chinese are the only non-military manufactures that can afford the chrome process of plating the Barrels and Chambers. They have also chromed the forward section of the Bolt. Chrome plating gives the best protection against erosion and corrosion than anything else besides regualr cleaning. The JW 105 is a copy of the Geveram and Krico that was very popular in the 1950s and 1960s, they were very good quality but I believe that Gevarm had to stop making them as the were too expensive to produce.

Switzerland Votes to Keep Machine Guns at Home.
13th February 2011. Voters from twenty of the 26 cantons rejected the referendum, to prevent the current system allowing army-issue weapons to be kept at home will remain.
In addition to the semi-automatic assault rifle that all those serving in the army can opt to store at home, there are thousands of hunting rifles and pistols.
Serving and former soldiers have been allowed to keep their weapons at home for over a hundred years.
Thomas Jefferson said that ,”An armed man was a citizen. An unarmed man was a subject.”
In an emotional televised debate, Defence Minister Ueli Maurer argued that taking the guns away would undermine the military. “The state asks from me, and all other men, that I be prepared to lay down my life if necessary, to guarantee freedom in my country,” he said.
“I had to swear to that when I was in the army… so do all the other recruits.”
” Now the same state is saying these young men can’t be trusted with their weapons. And that’s the problem, if the state starts to distrust its citizens, then things will go badly wrong.”
Swiss soldiers have been encouraged to keep their rifles at home after leaving the forces under a national defence policy that goes back a over a hundred years. The practice is seen as a symbol of the trust the state invests in its citizen army.
Yesterday Switzerland’s conservative politicians welcomed the outcome, saying it demonstrated the nation’s reluctance to end a practice that upheld the traditions of its folk hero, William Tell. “This is an important sign of confidence in our soldiers,” said Pius Segmüller, a Christian Democrat MP and a former member of the Swiss Vatican Guard.

A gun ban was strongly opposed by the populist, right-wing Swiss People’s Party, which organised a referendum last year banning minaret building at mosques. Shooting club owners had complained that the law would have destroyed many of the country’s 3,000 gun clubs, which function as key social centres in hundreds of villages.
The result amounted to a serious blow to Switzerland’s nascent gun control lobby. It had banked on a high turnout by women voters to get its initiative approved. But results showed that only the cities of Basel and Geneva and a few French-speaking cantons bucked the national trend.
There is no national firearms register in Switzerland. However unofficial estimates suggest there are between 2 million and 3 million guns kept in Swiss households. The population of Switzerland is only 7 million, they have been surrounded for hundreds of years by world powers. During World War Two, Reich Marshal Herman Goering threatened a Swiss General at a diplomatic party, stating that he could invade Switzerland with 200,000 men and Switzerland at the time only had 100,000 men in the Militia to oppose him. The Swiss General is reported to said. I will have to order my men to fire twice. The Swiss reputation for marksmanship is legendary, Germany never invaded Switzerland it stayed a neutral country surrounded by the greater German Reich, free to have referenda.
Australians, and all Commonwealth servicemen all take a similar oath to Queen and Country but our government does not trust its ex servicemen with a Daisy Air Gun, that will not penetrate one side of a pkt of cornflakes across the kitchen table.
Would the any of the Australian governments give the people the freedom to choose between free firearm ownership or be a slave to the State? The people could not even trust the Government to count the votes. Joseph Stalin said, “Its not who votes that counts, its who counts the votes that count.”
Freedom fought for and freedom lost, its enough to force us to find a free country to fight for, as this slavery is not worth it.

A Letter to the National Liberal Party on ‘Sameness’.

It has been reported that ex-Mayor of Brisbane Campbell Newman is going to be the Premier of Queensland, with 80 percent support in areas of South East Queensland. It is quite understandable after years of putting up with media harlots like Beattie and Bligh, both regular exhibitors of forced ” crocodile tears”, that people now want a change. It is also understandable that after fourteen years in the political wilderness, now for the first time the NatLibs can almost smell the leather on the cabinet benches, that they will want to be, all things to all people, not realising that was the singular philosophy that marooned them to the opposition benches. NatLibLab, no one can tell the difference. The proverb, “Those who stand for nothing fall for anything,” was the reason that the largest political party (in membership) the Queensland National Party, was decimated. The catalyst was the 1997 John Howard Gun Laws. I told Russell Cooper the then Minister for Police that if he accepted John Howard’s Gun Laws that ‘he would be able to take his fellow members of parliament to work in a mini bus.’ That predication was proved correct at the next election.

The electorate makes a decision to vote for a change of government, for one of two reasons:-
1.) By default, because they are sick of the ‘sameness’ of those currently in power, (which is a temporary one term change), or
2.) They will be enthused by the ideals of a Party or group with a difference, (this commands a longer lasting loyalty).

When the supporters of those ideals are betrayed as they were by the National/Liberal Party in 1997 they walked away in droves, no longer prepared to donate money, or man election booths. ‘Sameness’ between political parties produces a political vacuum which at that time was filled by ‘One Nation’. People flocked to it as it offered ideals in opposition to the sameness of ‘status quo’ such is exhibited by GreenLabLibNats, the political spectrum of one ideal, which ever produces the most votes. Not what is the best for this country, but power at any price.

Campbell Newman’s NatLibs have a choice to make. To gain power, they need to pick up eleven marginal seats in South East Queensland, they either apologise to the Shooters of this State and write it in ‘Stone’, that they will dispose of Long Arm Registration, or rely on Sameness. If the choice is the latter that will still leave the political vacuum, which will be filled by another party which will offer to stop the four month wait for licensed shooters to purchase a firearm, save the State millions of dollars, and utilise the ninety Police staff to do what they are supposed to, fighting crime and defending the public. Of course this new party would use other issues but that issue, is the one issue that people will put themselves out for, that issue will spilt the vote in marginal seats and deny Campbell Newman from the job he wants. Edmund Burke, (1729 – 9 July 1797) credited as philosophical founder of modern conservatism, as well as a representative of classical liberalism, is also credited with stating “Those who don’t know ‘History’ are destined to repeat it.” Lets hope Campbell Newman knows ‘History’ and does not repeat the mistakes of Russell Cooper. Self loading Breech Actions
With all gas operated automatic firearms primary extraction of the case is always more difficult than with blowbacks or retarded blowbacks. With the blowbacks, extraction it is assisted by the residual pressure within the case, which is pressing back on the bolt face and assists the extractor to start the withdrawal of the case. In fact in many blowbacks the case will extract and eject without an extractor, the extractor only needed for ill fitting cartridges or to with draw a loaded round that has not gone off. That’s no excuse not to have them as in filed conditions with mud in the chamber and extractor would be essential to sort problem jams out.
With the recoil operated system, the cams on the bolt or receiver which unlock the bolt from the barrel assist in the primary extraction. With the gas operated system, particularly with high power rifle cartridges, the gas is admitted to the gas piston when the bullet is proceeding with a velocity of, say, 2700 f.p s, .that is, the gas pushes onto the piston at a very high velocity. At this instant the case is still quite tightly frozen in the chamber by pressure of its walls. The piston and connecting rod, starting back at very high speed, causes the breechblock to start back with similar speed, which gives a tremendous yank or jerk to both the extractor hook and the rim of the case. The nearer the gas port is to the receiver, the greater the pressure within the piston and the more powerful the jerk, as the process has to work so much quicker and it often works before the pressure has reduced in the chamber to allow extraction. The extractor may break, or its claw may pull through the rim of the tightly sticking case. The extractor claw must be broad and sturdy, and its spring temper must should be the best available. Even so, extractors may break they often do. Any automatic firearm is not worth a cracker unless the extractor is easily replaceable without tools.
Practically all existing cartridge cases were designed for solidly locked firearms such as Bolt actions and have rims that are really too thin for automatics. It is always relatively easy for the extractor hook to pull through rims and it is one of the plagues of the firearm designer since Maxim’s day. The conundrum is caused by the Military powers resistance to new idea’s and when the inventor/designers of the 20th Century had massive problems getting the Military powers to accept automatic firearms they had no chance of getting them to change the ammunition that they had in uses and billions in stock to a cartridge with a thicker rim that could not be used by the majority of troops. Also the extractor groove of the case is not wide enough to permit the proper design for an extractor with a heavy and strong enough claw.
It would be fine if the designer of the action could also design the case, but unfortunately this is never possible because Governments demand a weapon to use a certain existing cartridge of which they usually have on hand a war reserve supply of billions of rounds representing an investment of millions of dollars.
Longitudinal flutes in the body and rear of the barrel chamber have been tried in an effort to reduce the friction accompanying extraction, but they tend towards gas leakage and split cases. Not the best for reloading either, and many military powers and police forces, reload the cases. The logical remedy seems to be to have a very perfectly cut and highly polished chamber that is relieved just slightly at its rear, as compared with the chamber usually seen on a fixed breech bolt action rifle, and to locate the gas port as close to the muzzle as possible. Reducing this rearward back pressure on the piston also helps extraction greatly.
With lightly charged cartridges, for which the action must be designed and timed, extraction difficulties diminish. New progressive burning powders (Ball powder) and lighter weight bullets have operated to reduce the pressures in semi- and full automatic firearms. This trend is currently being reverted as the U.S. Army has always complained that the 5.56 mm or .223 Rem has not performed well in killing power and the projectile was increased in the 1980s to a 63 grain bullet and now the gradual introduction of the Mk 262 with a 77 grain bullet pressures will be beyond the 55,000 pounds per square inch. Now that the U.S. Army which seem to drive military fashion is using the M4, with a 14.5 inch barrel. That barrel produces less velocity but still retains the high back pressure through the tube,(it uses the Stoner /Ljungman system) and will have a greater propensity to work too quickly. Resulting, especially in hot weather, of the extractor claws pulling through the rims, as the timing has no distance to delay the gasses from working the action, acting on the extraction before the pressure has decreased in the chamber. This sort of jam can be fatal at the wrong time in the wrong place. Sometimes Newton’s Laws of Natural Science cannot be flouted and either they must go back to longer barrels which can accommodate the timing or less chamber pressure and smaller bullets.

UNDERSTANDING RELOADING AMMUNITION
Bullets

During the past fifty years efficient jacketed expanding bullets have been developed. Prior to the early mid-60′s, only a few of the supposedly expanding bullets, offered in factory loaded handgun cartridges, actually worked as advertised for Australian game animals. They didn’t really expand under normal conditions simply because of poor design and jacket materials which were too thick. This phenomena was especially relevant to Australia as we have millions of Kangaroo’s and other soft skinned animals that have to be disposed of every year. We are the only country in the world where civilian shooters wear barrels out with bullets, in the rest of the world of course its corrosion with rust that destroys barrels. Besides Australia only the military wear out barrels with fully automatic fire, passing many more bullets creating lots more heat, that combined with poor cleaning techniques of course causes their massive attrition rate. They solve their problems at the taxpayers expense by having a quick replacement program. Corrosion, not erosion is the greater destroyer of barrels on a factor of ten to one.
In Australia the first development in thin jacketed rifle bullets with pure soft copper jackets and pure lead cores combined with hollow points which did expand well was with the Taipan bullets of the late 1950s. Taipan designs necessarily coupled with light bullet weights and high velocity i.e 20 per cent to 30 per cent less weight and 20 per cent to 40 per cent greater velocity was the first break away from the bullets constructed from left over World War Two factory materials. In the 1950s many .22 calibre jackets used in .224 projectiles were made from empty .22 Long Rifle brass cases they were normally to hard and tough for our animals, but in those days they were available and affordable. Not much better was available.
Over the past sixty years the major ammunition producers have modified their designs and now offer ammunition that we could only dream about in the 1950s. Luckily, in the USA during the early 1970s there was a ‘Varminter’ boom with millions of American hunters wanting bullets that efficiently killed their prairie Dogs, which they shot at long range with high velocity calibres such as the .220 Swift and the 22-250 Remington, .223 and .222 Remington. This forced the American ammunition market to produce accurate bullets that would not just drill a hole all the way through the animal without expanding, fortunately for us in Australia they were ideal for Kanagroo’s, Wallabies, Hares, Rabbits etc.
The manufacture of all modern jacketed bullets proceeds in essentially the same manner. With the exception of some of Nosier Noslers designs, bullet jackets begin usually as a strip of high quality copper alloy made specifically for this purpose. The thickness of the strip will generally be equal to the finished thickness desired in the base of a closed base design, or whatever thickness will produce the required jacket thickness at the point of a closed-point, full-jacketed type bullet.
The first operation is “cupping,” and for pistol-type, short-jacketed bullets, this one operation may completely finish the jacket. It is accomplished on high-speed automatic presses which punch out discs of the metal and then force them through a second die which forms them into simple, straight-sided, open cups of a specified length. In the case of a thin, short jacket for pistol bullets, the jacket may also be trimmed to length during this same operation by “pinch-trimming” where any unevenness or excess metal is pinched off by a shoulder on the punch passing through the die.
However, most jackets require additional work. The cups are washed and lubricated, and nearly always annealed specially if a hard material is being used, and then run through one or more additional drawing operations which reduce wall thickness and produce the proper internal profile, which is usually a straight or slightly curved taper from mouth to base. In some instances, as many as three or four operations are required to accomplish this, especially when internal serrations or other expansion controlling characteristics must be formed. After each operation, the cup must be washed, sometimes “pickled” in a weak acid solution, and lubricated. Continued in Next Edition

Norinco Model 213 ‘Tokargypt’ 9 shot Semi Auto

The Model 213 original basis was designed by John Moses Browning, the world famous firearm designer. In the late 1920s the Colt /Browning mechanism was redesigned by Russian, Feoder Tokerev, simplified for mass production and chambered in the powerful 7.62×25. Thoughts For the Week.
People Control

First I must apologise for the typing error in the last edition, “Scrapped Long Arms Registration, as has already occurred in Canada and NSW”, Should have read ” Canada and New Zealand“. Still with two members of the Shooters and Fishers Party installed in the NSW upper house having a part of the balance of power against the Labour and Greens a deal should be cut to remove ‘Long Arm Registration’ chains from around our necks. It is always possible. Apathetic bondage should never be tolerated.
On March 21st 2011 the Inspector in Charge, Weapons Licencing for Queensland, informed the meeting of the Queensland Firearm Dealers Association, that his department had caught up with all the back log of Permits to Acquire and they were processing them as they come in. When challenged by the floor about this he admitted that there may be a few lost in the system and that shooters who had been waiting since November should contact them and re-apply. Of course we know that this is incorrect as licenced shooters who have been waiting for months for their Permits to Acquire are phoning up and being told by the Inspectors ‘staff’ that they are still trying to catch up with December, “So just keep waiting”.
On the same day our local MP. David Gibson received answers from the Police Minister on this same issue. Part of the answers was a direct lie, as he stated,
“The Queensland Police Service advised various industry groups including dealers and gun clubs the Weapons Licensing Branch would be experiencing delays to service as a result of the implementation of the new Weapons Licensing Management System.” That never happened.

(3) However, if—
(a) the applicant already holds a firearm under a licence; or
(b) an authorised officer is satisfied there are exceptional circumstances; the period is the remainder of the day on which the applicant lodges the application for the permit.
Then relies on
The Weapons Act Section 42 Authorised officer decides application
(1) An authorised officer must decide an application for a permit to acquire a weapon as soon as practicable after the end of any period that may be prescribed for this section under a regulation.

He imposes that “as soon as practicable” really means, “in definitely” the Permit to Acquire is only current for three months and we have had customers waiting for six months. Is Six months “as soon as practicable“? They make us pay dearly for a system that won’t work, that imposes a sentence on the innocent, and serves no useful function. They make us pay dearly for the chains that they bind us with.
A Change for the Better or a Change of Tyrants
With the not surprising victory of the Libs in NSW, and the change of leadership in Queensland, the Lib Nats in Queensland can smell the ministerial leather on the government benches. They know that Captain Bligh is sinking under a ‘no win’ economic mess. A political change is in the wind. Some shooting organisations have been having meetings with the Shadow Minister of Police. The ‘heir apparent’, of the State Police, so reminiscent of the Gestapo and KGB is making promises and seeking allegiances. It seems that when in power the Lib Nats will not make it any worse for the Firearms Owners of Queensland. I could give a list of broken promises, from political parties that span the 36 years, I have been opposing useless firearm legislation, but that would be negative. I could give a list of the deals done by shooters organisations with political parties, but again that would, at present not be productive. I could give a list of reasons why the all this legislation was imposed on us, none of which is public safety, or a list of reasons of why political party with the largest membership in any state was reduced to 20 % within a few years of the introduction of these Gun laws. This issue split the National Party asunder and they have been in the political wilderness for fourteen years. They lost their foundation, the people who had worked for an ideal were disillusioned, they walked away in droves.
It did not matter that many of those pensioners who handed out how to vote cards on polling days were not firearm owners, it was the loss of the symbol of difference. Why work, or financially contribute to an organization that was no different to the Labour Party or the Greens, that had no difference of ideals? The National Party instead of protecting the individual had changed into a party bent on following the Socialist principles of the big Policemen, the bureaucratic nightmare that infects all of our lives from local government, health, taxation, swimming pool legislation, dog legislation, firearm legislation. All burdens on the backs of the people. All to save no lives, solve no crimes, just to fill data banks with your information over and over again, creating government jobs.
Leadership
Now, we need some one to show some inspirational leadership, some force that will reverse these impositions. Not just say they ‘won’t make it any worse’. Who is going to accept that. Who is going to put themselves out for that. Last year we had the Police wanting to impose hundreds of pages of further restrictions, increasing their numbers and ‘jobs for the boys’, so they have more responsibility and a greater pay scale. Only by the work of 1200 submissions did we escape that. No one did it for us, no other political party went to bat for us and promised that they would turn it around. No public statements in our support. With the Permit to Acquire problem, yes we have had a little support from a few MPs like David Gibson and the Independents. I believe it is the time to “Keep the Powder Dry”, but be ready to remind those standing for election that the ‘Registration of Long Arms’ has to go. That has to be the first of many impositions that has to be walked back before any assistance is given. Thirty dollars and an indefinite waiting time is treating us like the peons of USSR.
Our Benevolent Dictatorship.

Do we have to have a revolution for freedom? Do we have to break down the Berlin Wall? At least they can own firearms now. Think about it, do those people protesting in the streets of the Middle East have more freedoms than you? Do they have to wait 12 months for a building permit? Do they have to wait six months and pay for the right to work? Can they cut a tree down in their back garden? Do they have to wait a year for a licence for an Air pistol? We may get more food but we get less freedom.

I must confess to being a member of a very dangerous group. I am a physician: We cause more than 100,000 deaths per year in the USA by mistakes and various degrees of carelessness in treating our patients. Why does society tolerate us?
Because we save far more patients than we kill. Firearms are entirely analogous. Although used in far fewer deaths* – they are used to prevent about 75 crimes for each death. Firearms, like physicians, prevent far more deaths than they cause. (Gary Kleck, “Point Blank: Guns and Violence in America,” Hawthorne, N.Y., Aldine de Gruyter Publisher, 1991)
Consider the implications of the fact that firearms save many more lives than they take. That means decreasing the number of firearms would actually cause an increase in violent crime and deaths from firearms.
This inverse relationship between the number of firearms in the hands of the public and the amount of violent crime has, in fact, been proven beyond any reasonable doubt. (John R. Lott Jr., “More Guns Less Crime,” University of Chicago Press, 1998)
History supports the inverse firearm-crime relationship. In “Firearms Control -A Study of Armed Crime and Firearms Control” in England and Wales (London, Routledge & Kegan Paul, 1972, p. 243), Chief Inspector Colin Greenwood found that:
No matter how one approaches the figures, one is forced to the rather startling conclusion that the use of firearms in crime was very much less when there were no controls of any sort. . Half a century of strict controls on pistols has ended, perversely, with a far greater use of this class of weapons in crime than ever before.
In Tasmania, Australia, on 28 April 1996, a lone gunman killed 35 and wounded 21 at the Port Arthur Historic Site. The Australian legislature reacted by outlawing self-loading rifles and pump as well as self-loading shotguns. One year after the massive confiscation of guns the effects of this action became clear. Every category of violent crime had increased; the most striking was a 300 percent increase in assaults against the elderly.
Those demented persons who have expressed their frustration by a shooting spree have apparently retained enough good sense to choose places where those shot would almost certainly be unarmed: a schoolyard in Stockton, Calif., the Columbine High School, a Jewish day care center in Los Angeles, a Long Island Rail Road car (due to the highly restrictive ban on handgun carry permits in New York).
The emotional reaction to these incidents, attempting to make certain places “gun free” zones, for example, revealed a striking lack of rational thought. Apparently those pushing for “gun free” zones failed to recognize that the perpetrators of these incidents chose their sites specifically because they were already essentially “gun free” areas – practically guaranteeing no armed resistance to foil their plans.
Such gun-restrictive proposals are a certain recipe for making the situation worse. Lott’s studies have shown that such mass shootings essentially disappear in states that pass laws allowing qualified citizens to carry concealed handguns (The American Enterprise, July- August, 1998).
Consider the steadily decreasing rate of violent crime over the past eight years. An article in USA Today (K Johnson, 9 Oct 00, 3A) reported “Gun injuries in crimes fall 40% in 5 years.” This stark decline has occurred concomitantly with a constant rise in the number of firearms in the hands of the American public.
This strongly supports the “more guns less crime” relationship verified by Kleck, Lott, history, and common sense. This steady decrease has brought the current percentage of gun violence in the USA to its lowest rate in the past three to four decades. One would expect the anti-gun groups to be pleased and to moderate their goals.
Instead, apparently rankled by the facts proving their theories dead wrong, they are promoting increasingly prohibitive gun laws with ever-increasing zeal. Could it be that the media attention bestowed upon their cause has become addictive? Certainly, legislators have found the free TV time given to their anti-gun tirades something they cannot live without.
I suggest that a reason for the decreasing crime rate, caused in part by the increasing number of guns, lies, perversely and ironically, in the counter productive exaggerations and incessant repetitions, by the TV media, of each and every bloody shooting they can find.
This has frightened and misled the public into believing the threat from guns is ever increasing, rather than decreasing sharply, and has whetted their appetites for firearms to defend themselves. Thus the public has bought more firearms -which has further decreased the violence from firearms.
There is a perception among gun owners that they are being treated irrationally as legislators pander to the misinformed majority who are being swayed by emotional appeals that fly in the face of the studies cited above, history, and basic common sense. They feel that legislators should be obliged to soberly consider the facts and not have their votes dictated by blind, unthinking, and most often counter productive, emotion.
Consider firearm registration: being increasingly promoted by nearly all anti-gun groups – and politicians. These promoters neglect to explain why or how they expect firearm registration to prevent future violence; especially since, historically, such restrictive laws have always proven ineffective or counter productive – most often causing a marked increase in violent crime, as shown in the examples given above. We already know how honest, formerly law-abiding, citizens will react to irrational laws requiring them to register their firearms.
California has taught us. After Purdy’s shooting spree on the Stockton schoolyard in 1989, the Californian legislature passed a law requiring the registration of all “assault rifles.” In the emotional frenzy following that shooting incident, everybody expected legislators to pass such a restrictive law.
What happened? The price of “assault rifles” tripled in California. Many tens of thousands of these rifles poured into California before the law went into effect. Then came the time for registration. Very few “assault rifle” owners chose to obey the law.
It is uncertain how many criminals were created by this irrational law, but most estimate that fewer than 10 percent of the “assault rifles” in California were registered. If an estimated several hundred thousand “assault rifle” owners in California chose to become criminals rather than obey an irrational law, how many gun owners nationwide can we expect to do the same if required to register their guns?
Most of the facts explained above are unknown to the majority of the American public. The pro-gun political activists spend so much time harping on the Second Amendment that they tend to overlook the factual proof that decreasing the number of guns increases violence, and vice-versa.
Additionally, I believe that most Americans consider their right to protect themselves and their families a far more fundamental right than the Second Amendment.
Many honest gun owners are now frightened. They have every reason to be. Few of the facts outlined above have been revealed by a media that, instead, gives full play to the emotionally based appeals and flagrant exaggerations of the anti-gun groups.
These gun owners fear that they will be forced into a difficult moral decision: Do they obey a law requiring them to register their firearms, when they are fully aware of the irrationality and counterproductive nature of such a law? Or are they morally obligated to disobey such an unjust law -and thus become a criminal? Our forefathers faced a similar moral dilemma. Had most of them chosen to obey, we would still be a colony of England.
We must separate, dispassionately, the clearly established facts about firearms in the USA from emotionally based opinions, exaggerations, and falsehoods. No rational approach to any problem is possible until this is done.
I worry that irrational restrictive measures, such as mandated gun registration, will result in a massive backlash of civil disobedience – not by drug-dazed teenagers, but by sober, honest, and mature adults who are well-armed and proficient in the use of their weapons. That could tear this country apart.
*Footnote. When anti-gun activists list the number of deaths per year from firearms, they neglect to mention that 60 percent of the 30,000 figure they often use are suicides. They also fail to mention that at least three-quarters of the 12,000 homicides are criminals killing other criminals in disputes over illicit drugs, or police shooting criminals engaged in felonies. Subtracting those, we are left with no more than 3,000 deaths that I think most would consider truly lamentable.

Accurate Firearm Design
Self loading Breech Actions

During World War Two as the major powers began fielding reliable gas-operated semi-autos like the American Garand, the USSR Tokarev SVT 38/40 and German Gewehr 41/43, Sweden a semi -neutral country that had huge borders with both warring powers, USSR and Germany, the Swedish military realized their fine Mausers were nice, but quickly becoming obsolete. Their response was the AG-42, widely referred to as the “Ljungman.”
The AG-42 was designed by Erik Eklund, an engineer working at the C.J. Ljungman Pump Company in Malmo, Sweden. It was officially adopted as the “Halvautomatisket Gevaer 42″ in caliber 6.5×55 by the Swedish army in 1942 and remained in service until Sweden adopted and manufactured under license the HK G3A3 rifle (AK4) in the mid-1960s.
The AG-42B is a large rifle, nearly four feet long and weighing unloaded, 10.4 pounds. It shares the long, rifle profile has similar looks to the Soviet SVT 38/40 or German Gewehr 41. Due to the weight and its integral muzzle brake, the AG-42B is distinctive by its lack of recoil firing the powerful 6.5×55 cartridge.
Eklund was a very gifted designer. He designed the 10-shot, gas-operated, semi-automatic AG-42 and saw it officially adopted and placed into production within a period of 12 months. Rejecting the then common gas operated design using a piston and operating rod, Eklund adopted a direct impingement gas system the most simple, trouble free, gas system ever devised and seen today on millions of AR-15s and M16s.
The gas is tapped off through a port 9 1/2inches from the muzzle, directed down a gas tube on top of the barrel, and fed directly into a blind hole in the bolt carrier. The resulting blow to the bolt carrier forces the carrier to the rear, unlocks the AG-42′s tilting bolt, extracting the case. As the bolt carrier and bolt continue rearward, the case is ejected, the hammer cocked and the mainspring compressed. The mainspring then forces the bolt carrier and bolt back into battery, stripping off and chambering a fresh round in the process. This did away with the gas pistons. The Swedish AG-42B and its descendants, the Egyptian Hakim and the Rasheed, constitute a fascinating family of uniquely designs firearms that led to the AR-15/M16 and the AR-10 family of rifles. These gas powered operating system were patented by Eugene Stoner in the 1950s. Not a lot of credit was given to Erik Eklund and the Ljungman as is often the case in firearm invention. The AR 15, AR 10, M16 the same way gas operating system works by passing high pressure propellant gasses tapped from the barrel down a tube and into the carrier group within the upper receiver. The gas expands within a donut shaped gas cylinder within the carrier. The carrier is driven to the rear by the expanding gasses and thus converts the energy of the gas to movement of the rifle’s parts. The only major difference between the Ljungman and the Stoner system is that the Stoner bolt rotates to unlock instead of tilts to unlock.
Advantages and Disadvantages:
The Ljungman /Stoner system allows a very symmetric design that allows straight line movement of the operating components. This allows recoil forces to drive straight to the rear. Instead of connecting or other mechanical parts driving the system, high pressure gas performs this function, reducing the weight of moving parts.
In Piston systems, the path of the operating force is mechanically shifted around the action, resulting in a considerable mass of moving parts moving outside the centerline of the firearm.
There is a common belief that the piston operated systems are less accurate than the Stoner system because the operating parts start moving while the bullet is still in the bore. This is not true, US. Army Ordnance tests conducted in the 1960s revealed that the bullet is 25 feet out of the bore of the M1 and 15 feet out of the bore of the M14 before any operating part begins to move. It is more likely that the imbalances of the piston, operating rod, cylinder, and other parts hanging on the barrel produce disruptive vibrations as the bullet exits the bore.
Although movement of the operating parts while the bullet is in the bore isn’t apparently a culprit in reducing the accuracy of Piston systems, the inherent accuracy of the Stoner system has been consistently confirmed in competitive shooting. In all competitive events that allow use of any mechanism the shooter wishes, the Stoner system is prevailing. Few competitive shooters use the Garand or Kalashnikov systems, and even fewer FAL system. In American Service Rifle and NRA competition, the piston operated rifles are considered a disadvantage.
There is a debate about which system remains cleanest. The Stoner /Ljungman system tends to leave propellant residue in the receivers, while the Piston systems keep the residue outside the action in the cylinder. Piston driven systems, however, tend to allow more external dirt into the action because of the openings required for various connecting members (operating rod, bolt lugs, etc).

UNDERSTANDING RELOADING AMMUNITION
Bullets
John Nosler, (not ‘Nosier’, must be that my spell checker believes that Nosler is an incorrect spelling for a pointed nosy bullet) also produced another controlled expansion bullet design called “Zipedo.” It is a further invention of many earlier attempts to make a solid base bullet. “Solid” in this context meaning a jacket base of unusually thick section tapering abruptly to a standard-thickness jacket wall. In addition to the very thick base, the Zipedo is of only bore diameter over the solid portion of the jacket. This portion has rings rolled into it which raise fins to nominal groove diameter. Consequently, barrel friction and engraving pressure is substantially reduced. Then, the rear portion of the ogive (nose cone) and the very front portion of the bearing surface is of conventional diameter, i.e., barrel groove diameter. Again, the very thick and heavy base of the jacket resists deformation under high-velocity impact and insures that a substantial portion of the bullet will remain to penetrate deeply, even though the forward portion be completely destroyed.
Many developments have occurred since WW II, which are intended to increase the versatility of hunting bullets. One often talked about involves bonding the lead core to the jacket material. Where in conventional bullets core and jacket are simply held together by shape and close contact generated by high swaging pressure, true “bonded-core” design involves actual soldering of the core to the jacket. The obvious advantage to this is at terminal ballistics, as expansion begins, the jacket clings very tightly to the core and resists core deformation. Where bonding is not present, the jacket splits or tears as expansion begins and thus no longe’r offers any great amount of support to the core. It is not uncommon for core and jacket to become separated under high velocity impact, whereas bonding prevents this occurrence.
Where as the Americans who have the largest market in the world for sporting or hunting bullets see the future for game bullets combining core-bonding, or Nosler Partition or Zipedo jackets, or solid copper projectiles, in Australia where we have very few thick skinned game animals except for Samba deer and Buffalo the conventional open-cup bullet design will certainly be with us a good long time yet. In Australia there will always be a great need for bullets with a softer jacket material and pure lead core such as in the Taipan bullets, due to our thin skinned bipod game animals which do not have to penetrate a few feet of meat.
In spite of being nearly a century old, it is probably the most economical and practical solution to the hunting bullet problem we are likely to encounter for some time. It has the particular advantage that by careful balancing of jacket thickness and strength, core hardness, and core exposure at the nose, it can be adapted to almost any velocity range and/or shooting need. Its performance covers the range of bullets that produce explosive expansion at handgun velocities as low as 1000 fps, up to bullets that will produce deep penetration into heavy game at velocities approaching 4000 fps and they still work. In my opinion, that’s good enough.
