Owen Gun Instructional Wall Charts.
The Owen Gun, the best sub-machine carbine of World War II. Invented, designed and manufactured in Australia. Australia, that was at that time under threat of invasion by the Japanese. Owen Guns were made when Australians took it for granted that they made better quality goods and that Japan only made plastic toys to go into the cornflakes packets.
These charts are ‘as used’, by Lysaghts to train staff in assemble-diss-assembly at the Springhill Works, Port Kembla and Lysaghts Newcastle. They were also used by Australian Armed Forces to train there Armourers and Instructors on the Owen Gun. These Instructional Wall Chart Posters were also used by the Australian Forces from 1942 to 1967 for training purposes. These Owen Gun Wall Charts are printed on a banner vinyl, so do not need framing or laminating. Great for Returned Service Club, Rifle Clubs, Behind the bar, in the reloading room. Complete with the inventors Evelyn Owen signature. Two vinyl sizes

UNDERSTANDING RELOADING AMMUNITION
Properly Seating The Bullet.
I overheard an enthusiastic ammunition salesman statement the other day, it went like this. “Well reloading is dying out, the young people of today have no time for sitting at the reloading bench. They just want to buy the best for less and get into shooting, they have the money, we have the ammo so who cares, as long as they keep spending”. Besides, the realism that they (the young shooters) might not always have the needed money, and learn like their older and wiser to get more shooting for there dollars, he missed an important point. Once a young or new shooters finds satisfaction and success in manufacturing his own ammunition he is a convert to shooting for the rest of his life. For most shooters it even survives the worst shock to shooting, ‘Marriage’ and ‘Kids’ most wives can recognise that there nearest and dearest spends less, and whilst he is at home reloading he is not burning money up at the pub with his mates. Once a shooter realises the advantages of tailoring his ammunition to his rifles and pistols, once he becomes interested in the science of ballistics the chemistry is set for a life long hobby and that intrepid salesman and the shooting fraternity will benefit into the next generation. So please always encourage your shooting companions to join you in the reloading fraternity, everyone then gets more out of our sport.
One of the main reloading problems that get raised over the gunshop counter is the seating of bullets into the cartridge case. This is the final act in the manufacture of a handloaded cartridge. It is a simple procedure not unlike corking a bottle of good home brewed beer. By placing the bullet securely and properly in the slender case neck, you have completed the assembly; sealed the parts into a whole. Aside from little things like inspection and packaging, the work is complete when the bullet is thrust home to the proper depth.
It is not quite as simple just jamming the bullet into that hole. It has to be at a specified distance. Yes, you can assemble ammunition without that care of distance, and it will go “bang” and the bullet will go sailing off into the blue yonder, but odds on, as likely to go to the blue sky, as into the target your aiming at.
Clearly, the case is the package and the bullet is the lid, but the manner in which that lid is affixed to that package has a great deal to do with the accuracy that may be obtained from the completed cartridge.
It is necessary to understand just what function the case performs for the bullet. First, by the depth to which the bullet is seated in the case, the bullet’s relationship to the leade (origin of the rifling) is established. The amount of free travel the bullet is allowed after it begins moving and before it strikes the beginning of the rifling affects both accuracy and chamber pressure. The effect on pressure is discussed in the previous articles devoted to that subject, but the effect on accuracy is a more misty one. We cannot make a general statement that allowing the bullet a stated amount of free travel will produce maximum accuracy. The amount of free travel that will place the shots within the smallest group on the target will vary according to the type of bullet, chamber pressure, caliber, even the individual firearm, and many other factors. Heavy-barreled, single-shot rifles (.22 Target rifles) utilizing lubricated lead bullets quite often produce their best accuracy with the bearing surface-of the bullet virtually touching the origin of the rifling. Jacketed bullets in high-intensity cartridges often perform better if they are given a relatively good “running start” before being forced into the rifling. In many rifles, most bullets will produce acceptable accuracy when loaded to factory standard overall length for that particular caliber and bullet weight, but rarely can we ever reproduce all factory specifications, so we hand loaders have to be smart enough to work it out for ourselves. In handloading, we soon learn that variation from the standard will often, but not always, produce measurable improvements in accuracy. Consequently, in the beginning, it is wise to seat bullets to standard depth, then as you become more proficient and sufficiently skillful with the firearm, to edge the bullet closer to the rifling until increased accuracy is, or is not produced. Eventually, you will find a seating depth for a specific bullet in a particular rifle that will, all other factors being equal, produce a noticeable amount of better accuracy. So lets learn about this function of the bullet path. Continued in Edition 70.

THOUGHTS FOR THE WEEK.
If some one robs a bank by using a computer, who do we blame, the robber or the computer?
If someone robs a bank by using a gun, who do we blame, the robber or the gun?
When the Bank robs a person by using a computer, we have no emotional hick up, produced by media hype, we blame the person in the ‘Bank’ not the computer, not even the institution called Banks.
If drunken driver crashes through a bus stop and kills nine children and two parents, do we blame the alcohol, the car, or the drunken driver? Again we have no emotional hick up, produced by media hype, we blame the driver. The individual person, NOT the Motor Car.
Power.
So why does the media and the hoplophobics push the idea that instruments/tools/ firearms possess a will of their own, separate and apart from that of their user?
The answer to that question is “Power”, Government is Power, the Media is Power both entities have the real facts and figures from Parliamentary Libraries, University research papers they have all the information we lack. Not that the government or media publicise that information. Imagine, if they came out and said a million licensed shooter in Australia and four million licenced guns, (in reality the figure would be more than that) but they are determined to never let the Shooters feel they have political clout. They want to minimise us into a special interest minority group. As our numbers grow, they desperately clutch for further legislation to slow down the growth eliminate shooters, eliminate types of firearms and the latest is to register ammunition purchases and sales. Even though they do not have the staff to process the information that is required to register firearms, they still push for more.
They do this for more than one reason.
The primary reason is that they fear the ‘individualist’s’ who do not take in the political correct line. You know the one, “the Government is here to help you from the cradle to the grave.” For ‘us shooters’, they would help us to get there immediately if they could.
The secondary reason, is the same reason that the first Firearm Acts were introduced in the 1920s, politicians are very nervous of armed resistance, to there un popular directives.
The third reason is that the more regulation they impose on shooters, the higher fees we pay, employ’s an ever growing army of public servants all dependent on a “jobs for the boys” mentality, all dependent on their bosses who wield ‘Power’. They know that ultimately ‘Power comes from the barrel or a gun’, and they want all of this power, employees, money, guns within their power and control.
Who Are the Criminals?
Crime, Gun Thefts, Shootings they do not care about them, they would actively encourage it if they could, as in the USA BATF supplying guns to Mexican drug lords to assist in US Attorney General Eric H. Holder Jr Fast & Furious campaign to use the results of this to introduce firearm legislation into the USA. This resulted in two murders of law enforcement officers, it is now public information in the US Congress. These BATF federal agents are the staff that our Australian Federal Police, Customs, and State Police rub shoulders with and swap information and our records. They use one another’s media ploys, and idea’s to look good before their masters and give the law abiding shooter and much pain and derision as possible.
Prohibition
Our Power Politicians and Media know that Prohibition does not work, never has and never will, they do not even pretend to qualify that Prohibition produces a safer community. The world greatest experiment in social engineering the USA’s Vorstead Act (Banning the sale and production of Alcohol) was the world greatest lesson in the failure of all ‘Prohibitions’. The left wing media reminds us, as they create hype and sensation in there campaign to legalise drugs. That’s right they all are coming around to the idea that they cannot prohibit drugs, they have had a longer go at it, and enjoyed all the extra power it has produced, home searches, searching without warrant, search your car without a warrant, search your body at the airport. I do not advocate ‘one iota’, the use of drugs, two panadol is my limit for a toothache, or such like but prohibition on Heroin was only introduced in 1920s and Marihuana 1937, before that it was legal and Criminals and Government had nothing to do with it. All Government’s know that Prohibition does not work, but want the ‘Power’ that the prohibition produces.

“It’s a week since I received a copy of “Range Officers Hand Book” and since that time I am nearly at the half way mark. I’m amazed at the at the number of subjects you have covered making it one of the most informative books to be added to my collection. It must have taken you a considerable amount of time and experience to publish the book with information not available in other popular Gunsmith manuals. I would recommend the book to “Range Officers” and anyone interested in the sport of target shooting and hunting.” Regards Gene M Cornford P.O.Box 288, Kaeo 0448 N.Z. Firearms Gunsmith, Dip M.G.S +Member of American Gunsmithing Assoc. The Range Officers Handbook is an encyclopedia or omnibus of firearms and ammunition and the use of them, it has:- • 90 pages of Information for Range Officers, • 239 pages on Coaching to Win, • 110 pages on Air Rifle History &Training, • 33 pages on hitting Clay Targets, • 34 pages on Reloading Ammunition, • 6 page of Contents, • 18 pages of Index, • 38 pages of Old into New, ( Chronological History of Firearms) • 23 pages of Glossary of Terminology on Firearms and Optics • Over 1000 drawings and photographs. • Over 530 pages in a A4 stitched colour hardback., Some, hopefully will read it cover to cover, others will pick a heading out of the Contents pages and read a chapter or two, but no matter how much you know about shooting, reference material is always needed, as even people who rate as genius cannot retain everything. ACCURATE FIREARM DESIGN
Two Piece Stocks
With a two-piece stock the surface area of the receiver that meets the wood of the butt-stock and forearm, when the tang method is used, is only the length of the tangs plus the abutments of the rear surface of the receiver (recoil surface) against the front end of the stock, the clamped area usually being barely three inches. There is much more chance of looseness here, and moreover repeated recoil is almost certain to pound the receiver against the short contact in such a manner as is liable to introduce considerable looseness sooner or later. The through-bolt, such as in the Lee Enfield, is a much stiffer method of attachment than the tang when it is properly done, with the stock screw practically a drive fit in its hole in the butt-stock. Then we have contact the whole length of the heavy screw, which is about half an inch in diameter, as well as tight screw up contact of the grip end of the butt-stock with the rear end surface of the receiver. Of course in the last analysis the firmness of all these contacts and bedding depend upon the screws being set up very tightly and kept so.
Irrespective of the cartridge used, the finest accuracy has always been obtained with bolt-action arms having one-piece stocks, and such accuracy has been approached only by heavy single shot rifles having two-piece stocks with the through-bolt method of attachment, and this only when these single-shot rifles are used with relatively light cartridges.
All recoil shoulders, should always abutt squarely and hard against corresponding shoulders in the stock bed to prevent the barrel and receiver from driving back through the stock during recoil, and to insure a constant position of the metal parts in the stock. Remember, in the two piece stock the Butt Stock recoils to the rear with the barrel and receiver, but the forearm of the Lee Enfields, Lever Actions, Pump Actions all (like the scope) recoil forwards. That is the pressure which assists the speed of pump actions, so bedding the area’s where this energy bears on the front of the firearm is very important, for accuracy and to prevent cracked woodwork.
If the forward recoil shoulders are not very solidly bedded, that is if the least little set-back occurs, the rear end of the tangs are liable to act as wedges and split the stock at the grip. In fact with modern bolt action rifles which usually take cartridges giving rather heavy recoil it is common practice not to bed the rear end of the tang tightly in the stock, but to have a slight clearance between rear of tang and wood to prevent splitting. Have a close look at your expensive Sako at least they make ample provision for set back. The guard and tang screw holes must be accurately drilled in the stock so that these screws when tightened do not tend to back the recoil shoulder away from the stock shoulder, but rather to tighten up the contact. Guard and tang screws must be kept very tightly set up at all times or the accuracy will be very poor.
Fine accuracy is always destroyed by poor bedding, no matter what the type of stock. Despite good bedding, fine accuracy may also be temporarily disturbed by the warping, swelling, or shrinking of the wood of the stock, due to change in its moisture content from climate or exposure. (check plastics as well, not often, but some oils have negative affects on plastics) More of this in Edition 70

HOW THE ELECTRONIC EAR MUFFS WORK
These electronic ear muffs are a high standard ear muff in design, they are made to feel light and comfortable for all day use. They can be used as standard ear muff when the electronic component is not turned on and will passively reduce noise like any normal ear muff. They have a standard noise reduction rating of 29 decibel and are a Class 5.
Once turned on the microphone, located at the top of the ear muff, will pick up and amplify ambient noise. If some one standing next to you talks, their voice will be amplified through the speakers in both ear muffs. Should there be a loud noise, such as a firearm, the electronic ear muffs will automatically cut out and block the loud noise. The electronic ear muffs are designed to attenuate noise about 85 decibels, meaning that they will block out instantly, once the noise reaches a certain level. The electronic ear muffs allow you to control the volume level of ambient noise around you. On the shooting range with constant loud reports, the electronic ear muffs will block this noise. For range instructions or to communicate with another person, you can instantly hear them speak.
At the range or anywhere ear protection is constantly required, but you also need to hear instructions from others or you wish to be more aware of the ambient sound around you, these electronic ear muffs are what you need.
